I also play some lap steel which I tune to B D E G B D , a sort of G6th. And on one lap steel, tuned a fourth higher (to C) I use all plain strings! 011. 014. 018 020 024 026. It gets a bit harsh on the bottom 2 strings but I only ever play one tune on it, and that is almost all on the top 4. Pete
This was done as an experiment, and the top string is a little thin, but it is tuned up to G on a 24” scale and is pretty tight. The top string on this instrument is the only string I ever break during ‘normal ‘ playing.

I am not a fan of the unwound G string, Stefan Grossman used to advocate them on old Stella's but on resonators I am not convinced.
Also the other issue with an unwound G string is you could end up with your underwear falling down!!!

I have gone to an unwound 3rd on my NRP Style 0 since I fitted 12-52 Newtones. Still ok for slide with the light strings although the tone is not as full, but great for pre-war blues. I wouldn’t consider an unwound 3rd on the triplate, 15-56 MM Newtones. Been using Newtones on everything since 1994.
