Hi Guys, not visited here for ages. . . . I had a Blues 28 about two years ago and haven't really got into it as much as I should have. The sound of it seem dull and muddy to me, (I'm certain its my unfamiliarity with reso's & lack of ability!) it came with 13-54's as I requested but Ive actually hardly ever used it in 'standard' tuning so I was wondering if I put 15-56's on and only use it in open G will this open a new lease of life for me? Look forward to your (witty) replies! LloydV

Hi Lloyd
i have mine with Newtone 15s, and I keep it in Open G most of the time. some finger picks add some wuf and a good slide Diamond Botteneck or DaddySlide works for me.
the guitar does really really well finger picked with 15s, Open D, G or Crossnote. I'm workin on two Skip James songs and they suit this guitar.
good luck

Thanks Steve, I think most of my disappointment is my lack of technique. . . I'll get there. . . .eventually! Regards LloydV

Hello Lloyd,
Good to hear from you.
I wasn't going to join this conversation, but reading through it and checking my records I was reminded that I replaced your guitar in July 2018 because the first one I sent you was not to your satisfaction. The replacement instrument was a really nice one and definitely not dull and muddy. I can't find any record of fitting 13/54s. I may be wrong, but I think your guitar would have MM Newtone phosphor bronze 13/56s on it. Two months short of two years is quite a long time to leave a set of strings on a guitar, especially if it is not played much. Strings that are not played much, don't last as well as strings that are played a lot. So I would think they have seen better days and no longer sound very good. A new set of strings should brighten the whole thing up. My personal choice of gauges for open G and D tunings are 15 17 26w 36 46 56. It is exactly the same as a 13/56 set, but with a 15 on the top for a bit more bite. I have used these gauges on my own guitars for 30 years, maybe more and my relationship with Newtone is now heading for 29 years. I think you should get some new strings on it, whether MMs or whatever brand you choose, and then focus on technique more than the instrument itself. Just play as much as possible and see how that feels after a few weeks.
I hope that is helpful.
Here is a recent review by Grant McNeill at the Twelfth Fret in Canada.
Best wishes,
Shine On Michael

The reso sound is projected outwards rather than to you. Stick it on your lap and you will hear the difference. What audiences hear is not really what you hear. Also, the room you play in is a big factor. If you are playing in your bedroom with curtains, clothes, duvets, beds etc, they all suck up the sound. Try playing in a bare room. Otherwise, maybe you need your hearing checked?? TT

Thank you all for your input. Yes Michael, you did kindly exchange my original Blues 28 that suffered a terrible fret rattle on the 3rd string, it was despatched to me during a scorching hot week and I think the time spent in a van during the delivery didn't do it much good! It was while watching that video that made me realise mine didn't sound quite as it should! I am more than happy to purchase a set of new strings from you Michael, whatever you recommend for open G, just let me know how to proceed with this. Many thanks, you are most helpful as always Regards Lloyd

Sorry I got the last set. I had spotted them before reading Michael's post but talk about potential delays with orders from Newtone motivated a quicker purchase.

I think you'll find I got the last set! Lol! 😎👍 That's strange. I was just able to order another set through the same seller on ebay. Each time I order a service it says that this is the last set and the listing disappears after order, a short while later stock is replenished. The seller is Strings Direct and they are out of stock on their website so it is possible that they will cancel some of the orders. Strings Direct will probably be wondering why there is a run on MM strings.

Hi Purps, I've had the same experience. I once called them about the stock issue when the site said you could order multiple string sets and then wouldn't let you. I've had my order confirmed so time will tell. Normally I order from Neil at Newtone directly, but pick up the odd set when I see them advertised at a decent price. I'm optimistic we'll all get our strings! Lol!
Best wishes to you all, John

Just in case anyone is following the string thing, mine arrived a couple of days ago. As I said earlier I always order them directly on line from Newtone if I'm getting a larger, varied order, and of course you can pick Neils brains if you phone! Sorry for jumping on the thread, but a few of you seemed interested. Best wishes to you all, John
