Jan has some interesting and instructive things to say, though my video will be about particular songs not normally played in G, which hopefully will get people playing in different keys. I can see he probably knows more about cross key playing than I do, so he may have more technical stuff and better ways of playing the numbers on my (soon to be filmed) video. Should get it done over the weekend Pete

At last I (with help) have done a video of some of the numbers that crop up most at jams I go to. I don’t pretend to know the songs inside-out but if called upon I will play along and hopefully keep up with the other players. Jams in Cambridge all have similar conditions, someone ‘leads’ , chooses the song (2 or 3 depending on the number of players) tempo etc. and then 3 or 4 others join in, so if you don’t know the leader you can get out of your comfort zone very quickly. Often 2 people who know the songs to be performed will lead, so you can stop playing if the chords are challenging without there being an embarrassing silence . Here is a video of songs in E that I have played along with from time to time. If you play in open G you can see that E is a key you can play in. I am not a very technically advanced player, if I can play it you probably can. Though this is aimed largely at electric players I hope some acoustic players who ‘jam’ will try some ‘out of key’ playing Pete
I have already thought of some more E numbers, but I think I will do other common keys first, hopefully this week!

Derek Trucks would be a good player to study. he plays predominantly in open E but rarely uses a capo and plays in lots of other keys. Obviously you don't have the open strings available all the time like you would with a capo, so you can't do lots of hammer ons and pull offs with open strings, but the same notes apply and you have access to all the notes below where the capo would be, if you were using one. If that make sense!
I play electric slide like this quite a lot, I don't find it as easy as playing with a capo, or in the Key or E, D or G when tuned to those keys, but being able to play notes beneath the root opens up more possibilities too.

So here is almost the last video. I already have realised I have left several numbers out. Songs covered include, Crossroads and Strange Brew by Cream, Summertime, Help Me , all in A And, Red House, the only number I can think of that is usually played in B
As I my have said before, I don’t think I have ever started or chosen to play any of these songs but they do crop up at the jams I go to from time to time.
Pete
Just had a look at the list of songs, I have been known to play Dimples (a 12 bar version rather than the original) but I think that’s the only one
