I have made a few video lessons about utilising the CAGED system in OPEN D to break out of the 3 chord and/or barre chord rut. I have been using this to spice up my playing and it is really useful when arranging covers or writing original songs. I hope these videos will change yalls perspective about the open tunings being limited. There are 4 videos where I show and transpose different chord types from Standard tuning (Major, Minor, 7th and swing chords) and I am uploading song examples (also with tab) on a weekly basis to my channel. I am also available on skype to discuss these topics further. I truly believe this can be very helpful for others but you let me know! www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaKyuRQ66HpWq_8K8L-Shnk4lBg0sfZCx

Hello Blueswillismusic,
I am not trying to be unfriendly, or negative in any way, but before I thank you for posting the link to your Youtube lessons, I am trying to work out if you are offering a free service, or if you are advertising a commercial venture?
You have said "I hope these videos will change yalls perspective about the open tunings being limited". Hmmm..... after 40 years of playing all types of music in open tunings I do not believe they are limited in any way.

Though I play almost exclusively in open G I can see how useful your videos would be to a Vestapol player. My one criticism would be that not enough space is given to playing chords while wearing a slide. I often play in keys other than G on my G tuned guitar but rarely remove the slide. This means 3 finger (and sometimes thumb) chords are the ones only possible . Also a knowledge of bi-chords ( yes I did see your comment that you have to have 3 notes to make a chord but if you are playing with someone else hopefully they will provide the missing one). You have put in a lot of work to make these videos and I hope they do well and are not ‘commercial’ and are not suitable for this forum. Pete

I just watched the first video on Vestapol tuning and applying the five chord shapes of the CAGED system and I thought it was really useful. The blackboard section is very cool and simple to follow. I’ve always been a bit geeky about chords, inversions and harmony so it’s right up my street. I appreciate it might not be everyone’s cup of joe though.
Also, it’s the same guy who was playing ‘Swamp Dog Blues’ by Mike Dowling in the Gretsch reso comparison video posted by Vestapol (spooky) t’other day 😊

All my youtube videos and tabs are free and I am not selling DVDs or online courses either. Even my youtube channel is unmonatised Referring to people perceiving open tunings as limited I obviously did not mean professional players like you, but the average weekend picker (me included) who wants to learn OPEN D but the 90+% of the lessons are teaching the same 3 basic chords over and over again. So it wasn't against any players being short sighted it meant to illustrate the supply of lessons.

Pete Thanks Pete for checking it out and taking the time to comment. Slide playing comes in follow up videos, I wanted to establish the foundations and shapes in relation to standard first, and most people doesn't necessarily slide in standard. Also learning the triads in these videos will practically give you to power to select 3 notes form the shape and play it with the slide on your finger. I am also preparing to put together a video about fretting behind the slide. Also i use a lot of diads or bichords too, they are an integral part of music regardless if they are called chords or not. Btw I also usually have the slide on but sometimes I play arrangements where I rather use all 4 of my fingers.

The first two videos are more dry, talking about the shapes and relations but the 3rd and 5th has a bit more practical examples in them. Also I have been posting a few songs where I am using these chords with and without the slide on well known songs, those could be fun to learn too I hope.

Rather than asking people to leave the forum to watch your videos, I think it would be better if you embed them in your posts like this... You can't embed Youtube videos in the Quick Reply box, but if you use the Reply on the bottom right of the message you can embed like I have done. Shine On Michael
