Hi guys, Here is my 12-fret to body tribute to a 30’s National guitar ( ribbed cover plate came in ‘34), it is a steel body (the fridge magnet does not lie) resonator finished in a wood tone lacquer. The solid mahogany neck features a vintage style slotted machine head, a bound 'antique' walnut fretboard (12 frets to the body), and 1930s style tuning machines. * Steel body with 'Triolian' lacquer finish * mahogany neck with bound 'antique' walnut fretboard & vintage style slotted headstock * 9.5" precision hand spun cone * handmade maple string saddle solid rosewood biscuit bridge * 1930s style tuning machines * 16-56 gauge resonator strings * Oxford Nylon covered, plush lined rigid shell case Like the best of the mid-range resonators, Michaels and Franks, this one was setup and fettled in the UK before it came to me. £450 plus £35 P&P, or cash on collection from Leeds. For 20p a mile both ways I’ll delver to you! Only a few months old, but now I’ve got my Highway ‘61 and need to move this one on. Never left the house. Excellent condition. As new.

Though I’m sure it’s a great guitar, l too have a surplus of resos at the moment. However, out of an interest in these things could you measure the width of the body? I am wondering if it is parallel (like most early Far East ‘Nationals’) or has a slight taper ( like MM and later Buskers that tried to keep up with MM design tweeks) Pete
I think the F holes were probably made with ‘Michael’s’ cutter passed around the reso makers in Shanghai?

Pete, you are correct that my tooling was used to make those F holes, which I paid for and still own. I am not sure if they tapered the body, but if they did, they did it with my sides. The owner of the metal body factory is to blame. I do not wish to comment further because I want Ken to sell his guitar for a good price. Shine On Michael

Ah! Taper, now I understand. I’ve had resonators for years and never really understood until I dropped my Highway 61 into Steve Evans @ Beltona for fettling yesterday. It seems it has parallel sides.
The Icarus has tapered sides, 70mm at the neck and 80mm at the tail.
My Estralita on the other hand has a much more subtle taper of 78mm at the neck and 80mm at the tail.
Learning every day in every way
Cheers

Learning every day in every way Cheers I’m fairly sure our Dear Leader took the tapered sides design to Shanghai to make MM guitars more like old Nationals, Busker followed soon after and looks like others are now following suit. Indeed that is correct. In fact the tooling that makes the tapered sides of 70mm at the neck and 80mm at the tail was bought, paid for and are still "owned" by me.
