No idea, but if you look at his other items, it's all vintage stuff, so either he's making an illegal career out of it or running some sort of guitar scrapyard. If the former, you'd think he might have been called out on it by now.

I don't think they are relic. if you enlarge the first you can see rust, and how the screws are worn in the slots, and in the last you can see how rust has dripped into the pegheads - but that might be cleaning. It looks like he or someone else tried to clean the tuners for all the scratches. I've bought from him as far back as 2015, and all have been in clean condition, none of the pegheads cracked. I don't understand why those are so expensive though.

Hi again !
The tuner button pots are quite a wide diameter - one giveaway. Alo, you can just about see the Stewmac relic finish - quite a sparkly even glistening appearance, dulled down by what ever has been done to it. Also, on the underside of the plates, you can see the wee thin washer around each roller.

I'll admit that it is not a common occurrence, but I am inclined to agree with you. I have a set of the Stumac tuners right here and I really don't like to think the worst, but the more I study and compare them..... Shine On Michael

Just done the same thing with a Stewmac set I've got fitted to an old Supertone.
As mine are fitted in place I can't see all the back detail but they look remarkably similar to those in the eBay listing, washers 'n all...

Just to play devil's advocate I think with 99.9% positive feedback on over 27,000 transactions he would,as tall sailor suggests, have been called out by now if he was 'at it' The 'nicotine' stains on the pegs (more marked on one set which would have possibly been on the 'treble' side of the head thus absorbing more condensation etc.assuming a right handed player and perhaps playing in smoky sweaty clubs) IMHO more a case of Stewmac producing exceptionally realistic repros! (which we all know he does)

You've taken my earlier post about Sherlock very seriously Graeme!

It's my new hobby John and by the way how come you're now wearing a green hawaiian shirt when you were wearing a blue one on your earlier post.

Hmmm. I found a picture of the washer Snakehips referred to earlier on Stewmac - the 5th pix down. There is two letter or numbers on the stewmac peghead version though. I took off 5-6 defective tuners from vintage slot heads and there wasn't anything like that. This from the Stewmac vintage peghead tuner - they didn't show this on their slothead version-unless I missed it link

This is a set of Stumac. Straight out of a drawer in my office, no ageing, relicing or anything. Shine On Michael

Of course, there are other possibilities than the ‘genuine vintage from genuine trader - fake vintage from fake scam artist’ dichotomy suggests.
People have been known to put the StewMacs on older instruments, some might “relic” them for appearance. So someone at a guitar “breakers” could have taken them off an old, knackered instrument without necessarily spotting them for what they are.... (if that’s what they are...)

Great detective work. I would have assumed they were vintage. Nowadays one has to do their homework. Thinking about it, the turning gear ratio is the give away. Would be interesting to send him a question and see how he responds... i look at his auctions often...
