I was a kid of 16/17 when I saw Ry do vigilante man on OGWT. I thought wow I’d like to play like that. And here I am 50 years later still trying :-)

What the heck is that on his pinky? Lewis, Music Row is a place to talk music and musicians, rather than tools of the trade. However, Ry is wearing a glass slide that he made himself and it sounds pretty good to me. This was 47 years ago, a long time before anyone was marketing boutique slides. The music is far more important than the the tools used to create it. Shine On Michael

I 100% agree Michael, and that goes for guitars too, or whatever instrument one plays as long as it can stay in tune/intonated (within reason I guess). I just thought it looked funny, like a peg or part of an ashtray taped around his finger.
Anyway, I’ll go and find some YouTube videos to make amends :-)
Best

Fair question Lew. It's the tools of the trade that make the music as much as the musicians.

Lew’s question is absolutely valid, but this board, Music Row, is not for discussions about guitars and tools, it is only for music and musical discussions. Otherwise we lose the focus on what each board is about.

Not sure if this is a good recommend for Ry Cooder from the perspective of slidework, I had no idea what he was doing as far as guitarwork at that time, but I like "Paradise and Lunch" and "Chicken Skin Music" from the 70's although Teardrops Will Fall from "Into the Purple Valley" is one of my all time loves ...

The scratchy slide at the beginning of 'sho nuff' with Captain Beefheart plus more good stuff throughout the album. PD will remind us of the title! Safe as Milk?
Best wishes to you all, John

I have the Rising Sons cd, but admit I dont listen to it often. But it is apparent that Cooder had developed quite an advanced, clean slide technique early on (1965) in advance of many players..
