Does anyone know? Are all Gretsch metal body resonator guitars brass with painted surface? Or steel body with hype? Thanks, DJ

If they are nickel plated and shiny they are most likely brass, but if they are painted or matt plated they are most likely to be steel. I notice that Gretsch claim the Honey Dipper is brass and the Bobtail is steel. I think a trip to a guitar shop with a magnet in your pocket is called for.

Hmmm...the 9201 is the Honey Dipper, which Gretsch claims is brass.

As a slight rule, brass bodies are more likely to have rolled F holes and steel (or tin) mostly don't. Not a dead cert by any means* but all part of the detective process if you aren't standing in front of it with a magnet.
The one you mention looks to have slightly rolled F holes rather than flat cut.
*new Republics listed as bell brass look to have flat cut holes in their publicity images, yet on the one I've seen in the flesh they are rolled...

Woops. Next time I'm over there I'll take a magernet - the only problem is they have 'em high up on the wall and it's an intimidating place!

Tigercubt20, Thanks for confirming that.
So, if the brass bodied model is painted, I can only guess they are doing that for cost reasons because nickel-plating is more expensive than paint.

Just to clear up a few details when i was installing the MM pickup I was drilling the jack hole through brass no doubt but it appears only the bottom quarter of the guitar was brass the rest is steel...So in the marketing they can say one or the other sort of covers all bases,
