I would not pay 2k for it because of the condition of the headstock and the non original coverplate.

I have seen a guitar with a headstock had rhinestones inlaid on the headstock.I suspect that the same has been done with this but all the rhinestones have fallen out long ago

It’s getting temptingly cheap....

I've decided I actually want this

Is a sound decision. Even if it takes a while to find an original plate. I think it’s cheap. I’d be keen for one of us to buy it and do a piece on it, see what’s going on inside there

And if the headstock is too offensive I’m sure a tasteful overlay could be cobbled

Exactly. I'm thinking of two ways i'd do the headstock. An overlay is one. It might be the only way I can get my hands on a National...they're out of my budget these days even more than they used to be!

He's now decided to relist it as buy it now, £1599 or offer. man, seriously..it's not much more for a mint s/h one hahah.
It's looking like someone else will pay more than I am prepared to now. He'll be getting the offers in from watchers now and playing them off against each other.

He’s not making things easy that’s for sure. It’s on it’s 3rd listing now?

I have to say I did have a good look! The Kent DuChaine connection amongst other things put me off. Isn't he notorious for trashing cones? I think there's a thread about it, and how he would double them up! From reading that it's 'best played on your knees' because of a high action doesn't reassure. Headstock I could live with, it is part of the history of the guitar, albeit not a very attractive part as it is now. I was thinking of offering £1250 but decided not to. I'm lucky enough to have a couple of nice Duolians, so all I would be buying it for is a bit of binding and the picture on the back basically. All that being said, pick it up for not a lot of money, spend a bit fixing it up and you could have a National for under £2000. (I can't believe I'm being so sensible)! Best wishes to you all, John

The more I look at this guitar, I think that at the right price it is a good instrument. The headstock might look better if returned to its former glory with some rhinestones. I guess it could be covered with pearloid plastic, or veneer. The coverplate, as already mentioned, is not original and I would imagine the cone is a new one.
I think it is a little unfair that Kent Duchaine gets negative comments on this forum. It is correct that Kent has two cones in his own road guitar, "Leadbessie", but that doesn't mean he trashes every National he touches. Kent understands original National guitars, he has been around many of them and knows how to treat them.
I don't know Kent well. In fact I haven't seen him for sixteen years since we were last booked at the same event, but whenever I have been in his company I have enjoyed talking and playing music with him.

No disrespect to Kent intended! All I know about him is what I've read here and seeing vids which I liked.

From reading that it's 'best played on your knees' because of a high action doesn't reassure. Neck reset incoming. Add that to the obvious things and the possibility of less obvious things and it's not really a steal - unfortunately unless he drops the price more my other half would go nuts if that turned up and I said it cost a grand.
