Jerry Rosa is a bread and butter repair guy...not a guitar historian as he says...does very common sense repairs without a lot of pomp and circumstance...where is my hammer?

Hey Fred, Interesting video. Though I don't think measuring the intonation of vintage resonator guitar, you are about to repair, is a "for grins" thing. That measurement can explain a lot of the issues he found with the cone and would be a baseline for what to do for repair. IMO, the cone in those guitars are small and the bridge is a massive piece of wood. Sounds like a tone suck to me.

I have three instruments with a Schireson cone. They to me , have a tone of their own much like a spider cone differs from a biscuit cone. They are what they are and in my opinion all have their place. Oh and Charles Brasher Reso. is again a different style of cone and has it's own sound. I might add that the bridge that was taken out and replace was an original bridge. It would also seem the reason for the second hole in the bottom of the cone was to move the bridge to adjust for the compensation.

I am glad that some folks found the video interesting, and not surprised that some found Jerry Rosa’s approach controversial. I personally would have retained the original bridge. Re compensation, perhaps since he knew the guitar was to be played lap style, intonation was not an issue... NB I own a steel bodied shireson hollywood. I have not played it much or even looked at it in a few years...will have to take it out for a spin...  |

Celtic, I agree. They have a tone of their own. I believe you are correct about was the original bridge and about the second hole in the cone. I also think the crushed edge of the cone might be an additional attempt at correcting the intonation. I really shouldn't be commenting on the characteristic of the sound, since I am a huge proponent of Dobro Lumalites, and most people think those suck. Actually, I probably shouldn't comment at all. I'm just not sure about what I saw here.

Fredcapo, I've got a Schireson Reso. mandolin, Hollywood Reso. guitar and a wood hollow neck [ like a weissenbon ] but have never even heard of a metal body Schireson guitar. Would sure like to see a picture of it and hear more about it.

I took a look inside it a few years ago. Seems to be a truly one-off item. Crazy cobbled together neck stick setup. As folks around here understand, my impression was that it didnt quite sound as good as it did before I disassembled it
Celtic. Feel free to message me with your thoughts. I need to be disciplined, and can not consider a trade. Too many guitars on hand. I need to realistically thin the herd...though would tend to keep the rarer items.
