Hi Good People,
I need some advice from you Luthiers and experienced National maintainers please. I am going to have to take my National Radiotone apart to find out why the Highlander pickup has stopped working and with luck fix it. From the way it failed, I am hoping that it is just a dry solder joint/loose connection on the output socket and not a failed preamp as experienced by Snakehips a few years back. Of course, it failed during a gig didn’t it :-(.
Anyway, back on topic: I have never taken a reso apart and I am worried about messing up the set-up and intonation. Any tips on avoiding too much disruption and how to get the intonation right on reassembly will be gratefully received. Also is there a way of testing the preamp with a multimeter once the guitar is in bits?
I would take it to Dave King but that is a hell of a journey from where I live, plus I have other gigs coming up soon, so time is of the essence. I don’t trust any of the local luthiers with a reso, good as they are. If it is going to get messed up by an amateur, I would rather that amateur is me.
Thanks in advance for any advice and tips.
Slide on, Pat

My 1st thoughts are does it have an internal battery in the pre-amp??? Lee Hi Lee, I don’t think so. The Highlander has an external power supply that provides phantom power via the jack socket through a stereo cable from an external battery box. I don’t think there is any kind of internal battery. Best, Pat
