Hi,
When Bonzo came round for a chat the other day, we were discussing why I understring my Sollophonic. Hadn’t really thought about it, just always have, but the reason is that the tailpipe hovers 3mm or so above the coverplate. If it didn’t it would rest on the biscuit. So the idea for a short tailpiece entered my brain. Has anyone got one, or know of a good UK source? (Had enough grief with those Pratt’s in ParcelForce/Customs this week) Then I can string it properly.
Cheers

Ken, I often do have a few, but I don't at present. I will add a few to my current order and if you still need one when they arrive, I can sort one out for you.

Hi Ken, sent you a link to where I got mine. It's a short jazz archtop tailpiece, quite fancy looking but looks good on the Tele resonator that I rebuilt. I'll post a picture.
Best wishes to you all, John

Here you go Ken. Not much of a picture but gives you an idea. Wouldn't necessarily use it on a vintage National ! Best wishes, John

I have an Allen cast short tailpiece on my Dave King Dobro, nothing like the national pressed/stamped metal ones but a joy to behold.

Bonzo Looks can be deceiving, the shorter tailpiece with straight delivery out of the casting changes things, it is a quality casting which does not flex or pull like the dobro/National or archtop tailpieces, then there is the increased length of string behind the cone and the cone tension will be altered. Not everyones cup of tea but Washboard Chris on here has played the guitar, he knows his guitars and has had a few over the years, his opening comment was want to sell it !!! Go figure....
Also other forum members, Marshcat for example advised me never sell this one, when I took the guitar to Devon and dropped in on a pub gig Marshcats wingman also was interested if ever you...
I know they are a sum of there parts but sometimes everything pulls together.

Hi Lee, my comment wasn't meant as a criticism. One of the reasons I used a short tailpiece was as you mentioned it gives more string length behind the bridge. This let me lower the the bridge which improved the action while maintaining the break angle pressure on the cone.
Best wishes to you all, John

Bonzo have no fear thick skin here, I know the term understrung is used in hushed tones as an alternative phrase to what's wrong with that!!!
What is also interesting with the short tailpiece is the extra resonance behind the cone, that adds another dynamic to the menu.

Pete: Yes please, I’ll PM you my details. Thanks
Bonzo: I’ve been trawling through my bit-box and I actually have an old archtop tailpiece like yours, but in gold (colour). I can’t remember but probably got it when I was working on a Stella or similar years ago. I’m a bit of a traditionalist though so I’ll go with pete’s offer.
Cheers everyone

Also anyone got a stock or maple/boxwood saddles for biscuits? I’ve ruined a few recently and I want spares, I have enough biscuits just not saddles. As always happy to pay a fair price plus postage
