Hi Jon, I'm no expert but have been around singers over the years and seen a few things they've used from time to time. At the very beginning I would suggest not trying to find your voice or style. It would make it difficult for you to sing in tune while concentrating on those things. Maybe don't even sing the words to a song you're trying, maybe just pitch your voice along with your guitar in a non verbal way, aiming for a pitch and tempo you like. Make different sounds, try tuning to different keys to help. Good luck with it, everyone starts somewhere!
Best wishes to you all, John

Jono, I don't know any websites, but I am sure there are loads.
My advice to start with is to hum along to the notes you are playing on the guitar.
As a male vocalist, start with the 4th (D) string and try playing notes... open, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12. This is a five note pentatonic scale. Hum those notes with the guitar. Also try doing the same thing with a major scale up the same string - open, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12. If you struggle with the full major scale, try a five note major - open, 2, 4, 7, 9, 12.
Another excellent form of vocal practice is to sing along with your favourite artists.
Advice: Do not over push your voice to begin with and keep it well lubricated with luke warm liquid, water is good. Milk and all dairy is bad for your voice as it creates phlegm. Remember, it can only get better, just keep doing it. Make sure you sing every day, but not for too long. Your voice is a muscle and it needs to be developed, trained and looked after.
Sadly, in England and much of the Western world we have lost social singing and church singing from our society. In many countries, including Wales and Ireland, singing is still alive and well as a community activity.
Eventually you should be able to sing everything you can play on a guitar. In India, for example, you learn to sing the notes of a raag before you ever pick up an instrument to play it on. That is like me saying to you that I want you to be able to sing and recognise the melodies all of the classic delta blues songs in the key of G before you try to play them. This is something you would need to have started as a young child, but it is a very good thing to think about.
The idea is that when you hear a song you recognise the scale (not the key) that is being used. The key is not important, it is the scale, or the intervals between the notes that are important.
Get singing!

Lots of good advice Jono! As Michael mentioned you do need to drink and keep your vocal chords moist. I find Captain Morgan and ginger beer does this very well. It also has the advantage in that the more you drink the better you will sound! (At least to yourself) Lol!
Best wishes to you all, John

Try and find a local choir Jono. Most of them accept beginners and you'll learn and have fun at the same time.

I would suggest one or two singing lessons. There are plenty around in Kent. They would address finding your voice, breathing and analyse your issues.

Singing lessons. Sorry, but it's a must. Get the basics right then go off and develop your own sound. Two key things:
- Not singing from the throat, sing from the mouth. Otherwise it screws up your vocal cords. If you are humming as suggested above then gently hold your lips together and make sure they are vibrating while you hum.
- Getting your breathing right so you are supporting your voice. This will help hugely with tuning as well.
I'd also sing away from your guitar to start off with. It's hard to concentrate on two things at once, particularly when you are learning one of them. Cheers, Rich

"Captain Morgan and ginger beer" jEEz I've been drinking Wray & Nephew rum with D&G ginger beer. Really does improve the interpretonation. Singing in the car works for me because no one else hears it but it does help me to know what's possible (no rum & driving, thank you). I can't practice anywhere else (electric guitars or keyboards) unless I use headphones.

I have been strugling with my singing for a long time. Singing lessons with a good teacher were very encouraging. She used CVT method ( Complete Vocal Technology) and that was very much mind opening.
Best regards Pertti

I think it was found by danish Catherine Sadolin. Basic idea was that there are a lot of different and correct singing.... in away opposite to classical singing. Important is to get basics right to keep your voice healthy. completevocal.institute/complete-vocal-technique/

Gaye Adegbalola is a US musician performer who has IMHO an infectious enthusiastic style about her - she performs, records and used to teach blues singing and writing workshops. Some of her students sound pretty good!
And here's some of her students in performance:
