@ MM,
IIRC, in a past posting you stated you used very heavy strings on student model for "Diving Duck", same even tuned to high-ish keys. upon attempt to put some "cables" on mine, i became worried about overloading the low mechanical advantage OEM tuning keys and completely abandoned the plan.
the worm gear and tuning shaft bores don't seem loose for what this "economically expedient" design offers in other guitars i have had experience with. any kind of special lube requirements for the open back tuners that i should know about?
@ ALL MEMBERS
does someone know of aftermarket tuners that will fit without permanent alteration to head?
[mount holes and tuning shaft diameter matching]
thanks in advance, mitchfit

I have an 1133 Student Model and over the years (going on 40) the plastic buttons started chipping off so I decided to try to replace them. I got these at a local music store but I forget the brand and don't recognize the logo. The originals have rock maple blocks that work. I didn't do too much damage and the plates on the sealed tuners would cover up any new screw holes. For me the guit is what it is. Attachments:

Snakehips is correct, you can get identical brand new Kluson copies. You can also repair the old ones and fit nice new vintage-style buttons on instead of those weird square blocks. Repaired and cleaned up they should work absolutely fine.

apologize for lapse of attention. after 2-3 days it seemed what i wanted was not made, and i just forgot about it.
also the national circus has been in town, and i bought my ticket way back on 4/15/2019*.
will be looking into the many good suggestions above. but i don't thing the OEM units are beyond normal sloppy for this design. plastic tuner buttons don't seem dried out/cracking, or even getting loose in bond to shaft.
perhaps factory WAY HIGH nut is part of issue, weren't these made in two heights? looks like typical lap steel height @ zero fret. steep angle down to tuners friction?
joephoto, thanx but can't bring myself to alter/drill even mount screw holes.
will be checking into mentioned options.
thanks, mitchfit

The plate screws for new Klusons will fit directly into the old screw holes in the headstock
