I've been looking at wood bodied resonators but there doesn't seem to much choice out there obviously the blues 28 in a strong possibility but I also really like the sound of tom Feldmanns guitar(of the Grossman guitar workshop)I think it may be an el trovaor? There's a video of him using this guitar on YouTube on his blind Willie Johnson lesson if anyone's seen it? Anything else I should be looking at? Thanks Sean

Sean.I feel it would be highly inappropriate to suggest another maker /suppler of similar stuff to Michael's (especially in the same price bracket) on this forum..

Am I missing something here? The el trovador(if that's what it is?)is in a completely different price bracket Just trying to get an idea of what's out there. I've read countless threads on here about how good the mm blues 28 is but are the higher priced guitars really any better? sorry Jono if I've missed something. Thanks Sean

For what it’s worth I’ve read other threads where different brands’ guitars in similar price brackets to MM guitars have been discussed. I think Michael is cool with it :-) I hope so as I’m pretty sure one of my first posts as a forum member was asking about which to go for...MM, Busker, Republic, Gretsch, etc, etc... 😬

Hi chaps, I don't mean anything by cutting in, so to speak. I personally don't see any impropriety in the original question here. I can see what you're both saying, and etiquette can be a pretty subjective thing on a forum. Michael is very cool and I'm sure there's no harm done. After all, this is the platform to quiz like minded people about their opinions on music and guitar related issues.

Hey archiekidd, no harm at all as that is what I thought I was getting at in my comment ha ha. I think it is ok to discuss and compare for sure. I think outright advertising of other brands on the other hand would be wholly uncool!

Absolutely! I was going to pop something in about crass advertising of other products but didn't want to go too far off topic. Now we ARE off topic! I wish I could help regarding your initial question but I've only ever owned steel and brass bodied resonators. Good luck in your quest.

I have never played an el Trovador but I imagine that I wouldn't like the deeper body. I would get the Blues 28 if you are looking for a budget option, and if you have the money to purchase a new national you should consider paying a little bit extra and purchasing a www.fineresophonic.comor possibly a www.deltaresonatorguitars.co.uk/models.htm. The National El Trovado sells for around £2800 in the UK and the fine resophonics start at £3064 OR keep you eye on eBay to see if you can get a good deal on a used NRP guitar.

Thanks everyone but i don't think I've made myself clear?in a nutshell is it worth spending x amount of pounds on one of the more expensive brands when the mm will do the job.i realise this is subjective and the more I think about it it's probably a daft question. Thanks Sean

with different tuners and biscuit bridge my metal mm blues is as good as a new national .. i would say the same would go for the wooden one.

I think the main thing with resonators is there isn't many shops where you can try a few out.Your sort of in the dark and knowing what you want is difficult when you have nothing to compare it to. Thanks Sean

Hi Sean, where are you based? I’m sure if you live nearby a forum member who has a 28 or an Estralita etc then they would be happy for you to try them out :-) I’m in West Sussex and own a MM B28...if it’s not far for you then feel free to come by and try it out. I’m afraid I’ve never played a wood bodied NRP so can’t comment. I’ve played 3 or 4 metal bodied NRPs and only with one of them did I think it was perhaps better than my MM Blues (steel body)... £1500-£2000 better? Not for me, but then who am to say 🤷🏻♂️ Also my pockets aren’t very deep so the difference in money between a MM and such, and a NRP is a pretty big jump for me!! Hope that helps Lew

I have no problem with this thread at all, because although I do have to bite my tongue occasionally, this is a public forum and within reason must stay that way to achieve its goals. I did snap a few months ago and I did it publicly, but it was not because other brands were being discussed here, it was because this forum was repeatidly being used by another company to gain access to customers. While I am as open minded and generous as I can possibly be about other brands being discussed, I am not a fool.
My silence on this thread over the weekend was purely based on my 'no advertising' house rule.
Can I recommend other brands? Yes... and I often do, but unless you go into Dobro-style spider-bridge territory, or NRP, I wouldn't know where to send you.
Thanks to everyone for such kind and supportive words.
Shine On Michael

Thanks Sean Sean, I see you are going to Pocklington this week as I am, too. I'll be arriving Thursday late afternoon / early evening. You would be very welcome to knock seven bells out of my MM Blues'28 if you want to see if it suits you. Mine is NOT FOR SALE but it will give you a good idea of what these guitars are about.
