Can somebody tell me will the tuition be available on the Friday looks like im off that day should be able to make it. thanks sean Hi Sean, On Friday we meet at the arts centre between midday and 1pm. Many people have done long journeys so a sandwich and natter for an hour relaxes everyone. The tuition is from 2pm until 5pm and there are student performances in the evening. If you come for the afternoon tuition, you are welcome to stay for the evening session too. Shine On Michael.

Hi Sean Please do not worry that you will feel intimidated by the whole thing. It is a relaxed, friendly, laid back, unpretentious, uncompetitive environment. Players of all levels attend and everyone is made welcome and to feel at home. I promise you will not feel intimidated in any way. Shine On Michael

Last year I went for the first time and I could have typed your post before I went. It turned out to be a great week-end, learned loads, met a bunch of terrific people who put up with me, not an ego in sight. It was fun with a bunch of like minded people - hence the reason I'm motorin' North again this year. Hope to see you there....

Hi everyone, I am really very happy to announce that the Pocklington programme is now in place. Due to a situation that was out of my control it has has taken a little longer to set up than in previous years. I am always looking for tutors that will make the event interesting and exciting. They have to be right for the event, which means they have to be world class guitarists, great teachers, great performers and last and definitely not least, a lot of fun to hang out with. This year I am very happy to introduce you all to one of the finest virtuoso guitarists in the world, and I promise you that I am not exaggerating! Well known throughout Europe and parts of the USA for being one of the great guitarists currently touring and recording, this year our guest tutor is Damir 'Hal' Halilic from Croatia. (Known professionally and to all his friends as 'Hal'). Hal is something of a superstar in his home country. Hal is truly a master guitarist. He is quite simply one of the greatest guitarists in the world and was the 2014 Porin Music Award winner. In the past decade Hal has recorded six critically acclaimed albums and collaborated with many of the world’s top guitarists, including Martin Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel, Woody Mann, BJ Cole and John Jorgensen. I have known Hal for twelve years. I have done many gigs and festivals with him and I can promise that spending time with Hal in his classes and at the evening events will be a fantastic experience for everyone involved. This man is a MONSTER GUITARIST! Here is a note that Hal wrote to me this morning. Hal is so humble and such a great man that I thought I would just copy & paste his email for you to read.... Hi Michael, Watch these videos. All are based on Blues styles, but as you can hear that they are in fact a mix of American styles like Piedmont musicians used to play a long time ago - Ragtime, Blues, Jazz, Folk and Country. I am happy to bring instructional DVDs for each student (for free) so they can see how to play those and many other tunes. The DVDs contain slow motion footage so even beginners can understand how to play these pieces, despite the fact that it may look difficult and that some will not be able to play that immediately. But one thing for sure - using the DVDs that I can give them, the students will understand how this was done, as well as how to practice. With my DVDs they will understand how to play all those techniques. My experience with more than 500 students over many years is a guarantee of quality tuition :-))) Of course, we can also work on more simple stuff too. Anyway, no joke, I can prepare very interesting stuff based on Blues & Roots styles that will be useful for Pocklington students of all levels - I really have a lot of experience with teaching. Yours....Hal.....There are hundreds of Hal's videos on Youtube! >>>Oh yes, I nearly forgot to say that I will be there too! I will be running my slide guitar classes and this year we are going to open up some new areas to spice it up! There will be more information posted on here about the weekend in the coming days. Here's Hal playing a proper guitar! Thanks everyone Shine On Michael View AttachmentView AttachmentJust ten days to go, so I thought I would give it a final BUMP! Shine On Michael

Thanks to the York Press for an excellent editorial on the Pocklington weekend.... www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/17205512.more-than-a-gig-of-the-week-acoustic-blues-roots-weekend-pocklington-arts-centre-november-16-to-18/?ref=fbshr&fbclid=IwAR1eX9Pj7Or2XtwuyCRTLW0DFrOMvYwwsi3P_-ymHwEWpw9s0fYc-0FCTo0More than a gig of the week: Acoustic Blues & Roots Weekend, Pocklington Arts Centre, November 16 to 18
By Charles Hutchinson Acoustic Blues & Roots Weekend, Pocklington Arts Centre, November 16 to 18 DO you fancy honing your guitar skills under the tuition of respected guitarists Michael Messer and Damir Halilic? If so, head to Pocklington's Acoustic Blues & Roots Weekend, hosted by virtuoso slide guitarist and blues innovator Messer. This annual event on the Pocklington Arts Centre calendar features guitar and slide guitar tuition, jam sessions, student performances and a special Saturday night concert. "This is a weekend for anyone interested in playing acoustic guitar and slide guitar in blues and roots styles," says PAC director Janet Farmer. "All levels are welcome. Acoustic instruments only." Messer took over the running of the event five years ago. "I've been coming to this weekend for a long time. I just love it and the venue is perfect for it," he says. Messer will be teaching slide and lap steel guitar; Damir Halilic, otherwise known as "Hal", from Rijeka, Croatia, will be teaching fingerstyle guitar. "Hal is quite simply one of the greatest guitarists in the world; it’s special to have him here to do this," says Michael. "In the past decade, Hal has recorded six highly acclaimed albums and collaborated with many of the world’s top guitarists, such as Martin Taylor, Tommy Emmanuel, Woody Mann, BJ Cole and John Jorgensen. Spending time with Hal in his classes and at the evening events will be a fantastic experience for everyone involved." One highlight of next weekend will be the Acoustic Blues House Party on November 17: a chance to hear Messer and Halilic playing together, solo and with guests in an intimate, relaxed, "unplugged" performance at 8pm. Janet says: "It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Michael and his Acoustic Blues and Roots Weekend. The venue comes alive with the sound of world-class acoustic blues and roots music, which is simply wonderful, and it’s always a highly popular weekend with all ages and all abilities, so I'd encourage you to get your tickets now or risk missing out on what is a truly special event.” Tickets cost £145 for the full weekend; £35 for Friday only; £80 for Saturday and the concert; £12 for the Acoustic Blues House Party only, on 01759 301547 or at pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk. Charles HutchinsonMichael Messer and Damir Halilic will lead a weekend of Acoustic Blues & Roots at PAC ------------------------ Shine On Michael

Hi Michael,
In previous years we have discussed having a lap slide session during the weekend. It was always mooted as a Sunday morning ‘thing’, but has not happened yet, mostly because doing anything after the exertions of Saturday has been too awful to contemplate.
I’m interested, is anyone else?
If there is an interest I’ll bring my Weissendeath with me.
Not long now!
Cheers

Yes, let's schedule a lap steel session into the weekend. Bring Weissenborns, Weissendeaths, Weissenmarriages, Dobros and any other Hawaiian-style acoustic guitars! ....and if you don't have a guitar with raised strings, it is still fine to learn on a regular guitar. If anyone has anything they would like me to cover at the weekend, leave a note on here and we'll do what we can. Shine On Michael

I would have loved to come along to this but alas my arthritis would not cope with the five hour journey . I hope everyone has a great time, learn a lot, make friends and do loads of sliding up and down your necks (ooops, that just sounds wrong...). Cheers, Mike.
