I viewed Lenny's video on YouTube. I now know that first off with strings one and six, you go one turn outside and then cross over winding towards the middle of the headstock. Strings two, three, four and five are the opposite- one turn inside and then cross over winding towards the edges of the headstock. e&oe.......I have never done anything like that in my life and I don't know anyone that does. I think it is very easy to get caught up in this kind of technical weird and wonderful ways of fitting a string. Everyone I know, professional musicians, luthiers and collectors, just put the strings on with enough wraps to stop them from slipping. Shine On Michael

Which underpins a remark I made regarding YouTube videos a few days ago. It seems I must unlearn what I have absorbed today. FWIW, it seemed to work OK.
I don't wish to fork the thread but it's worth noting that the holes in my StewMac Golden age tuner capstans are VERY close to the central wood. On the low string, there is barely room to wrap one turn around between the take up hole and the middle. Perhaps this is why I have difficulties? Who knows.
Edit: the take up holes on your Fine Resophonic look entirely different from my Golden Age machine heads. Hmmm.

When I make some videos I will include one that has Golden Age tuners, which I have on my fiddle edge Dobro. I could even put a set on an MM for the video.

Stevie, the tuners on my Fine Resophonic are Schallers. The Fine Resophonic headstock was the pattern I based MM headstocks on.

I would take any 'how to' videos on youtube with a MASSIVE chunk of salt, especially the ones that start of with a Hollywood style intro. For every genuine expert there's another fifty who think they are!

I can see that Graeme and I noted as much earlier on, but it's also true to say that it's an amazing resource that has saved me a lot of money many times. We just need to exercise a little caution. In this life, whatever you encounter, just keep asking questions and sooner or later it will flush out the "because it is written" brigade.
It's true regarding those intros too. Most of the background music is at best questionable and at worst just plainly unwarranted within the context of the clip.

My new ones have arrived! A set of Master Class 12s for my old Regal Birch Parlour. A set of MM 13s for my old Triolian.
...and.....wait for it.....
A Custom 5 string set for my neighbour who wants to try them on his 5 string guitar banjo thingy. It is a guitar but with a banjo neck, stringing and tuning.

A couple of sets of MM Monel 0.015-0.056, each set in a gas-tight pack with the MM & Newtone logos, arrived today. A couple of weeks after Neil posted them... not his fault I'm sure. Sorry to say, my recording gear took-off on Tuesday, and the little Nikon thing I have is great for interviews and research notes, but useless for live music. Besides I'm off on Monday and not back til mid September. The single cone resonator for which I've bought the strings to try, is staying put. But if I get the chance I'll try to string up on Saturday or Sunday and give the strings and inital try, and feedback if I can. I'm sorry I can't do more at the minute... D

The six sets I've ordered finally arrived today (France), also two weeks after the email of sending notification from Neil... ... As I've been back to work today, it will take me extra time to test those fresh sets in good conditions !
Can't wait to try the 0.015/0.056 on the kay archtop (with soundhole) of the 30's tuned to standard but one or two tones below : with its dry tone & great reverb, it should brings people out in gooseflesh on a track like "in the pines" if I play it th good way !

Apologies if this is a bit terse, I'm writing on my phone as I travel. And I'm probably going to get some ribbing for the style and content... but hey this is who I am, so no apologies there... and here we go... As promised, a first impressions of the Newtone MM Monel strings. They might be useful to someone...
First Impressions...
Pitch stability: Using a Snark Hz tuner, the maximum variations in pitch were around 0.1 to 0.3 of a cent for both wound and plain strings, played open and fretted. But for most of the sustain the strings stay dead on pitch. I'd say these strings have the best pitch stability of any I've played in the last five years.
Tonal coherence: By this, I think I probably mean a clean and balanced set of overtones. Most of the common packs of mass market strings, (and I include Elixir, D'Addario, Gibson, and Martin in this comment) have a kind of "fractured" sound on the plain strings. D'Addario NY plains and cores are better, and the difference can be easily heard. I can tell these MM are different to the D'Addario NYs, but I can't say one is better than the other. Both sound a little sweeter than the rest of the gang, and for want of a better word (from memory) I'd say the Newtone MM are just a little softer, some of the higher end harsher overtones, that I can get with my finger nails, are missing, which is good. The wrapped string coherence is way ahead of the Martins I've played on Nationals this year, and I would put on par with the D'Addario Nickel Bronze with NY cores...
Timbre and all the other stuff: There's no obvious impact on dynamic range of the guitar, (finger energy in = volume + sustain out) but there is a great range of timbre to be had from choosing the spot you pluck/pick/strum. And for me as a finger (rather than slide) player there is minimum string noise, but I can still get a good "jug" sound from sliding up the base strings. String slap is sublime, but only time will tell if my frets survive.
Value for money: strings.ie generally supply me with all my strings and I'm happy with the deal I get from Paul there. But the D'Addario NBs (with the NY cores) aren't cheap, especially when you add in the cost of swapping out say the first and second strings for non-standard resonator pack gauges (.015 and .019. against .016 and .018). I think I paid about €20 for my last sets. With postage, these Newtone/MM/Monel worked out at around £10+ a set, so I'd say given the quality, they're probably very competitively priced. Tho' if this were my main guitar and I was spending £120+ a year, I'd buy bulk/contract and ask for discount.
Conclusion I've yet to decide if these are the strings for this particular guitar, but I've bought two sets and they certainly have my attention and might just woo me away from those NY cores especially given the pitch stability and the price. D

Thanks, PD.

I played Jon B's monels on his 12f MM blues. Gotta say the guitar sounded brilliant, but who knows how much of that was the guitar or the strings. As long as they work with mag pick-ups, I may well get a couple of sets. What's the procedure for ordering some? TT
