Mornin'all. I've spoken to Neil at Newtone again about him producing some round core MONEL strings and he's positive on the proviso that enough people are interested to justify him bringing in the raw material to make some sets. So, come on, who and how many of you want him to make some that you can buy and try? Please, please, please! Please let us know, either me or Newtone direct.

I’d be interested in buying and trying some - any idea whether there’d be a minimum order requirement?

I think it will certainly be interesting to test some monel strings. There maybe an MMPD Newtone set!

I have used nickel strings on steel, brass, wood and German silver resonator guitars, and it sounds great, if that is what you like. As I said, it is all a personal taste thing.

I'd be interested to join in and try some PD, but I'd only commit to a single set. Here I go again: "when I was still at work..." I occasionally had to use Monel rivets, both solid and "pop". The solid rivets take much more effort with the hammer to set down and the "Pop" rivets really do bang your hands something bad when the mandrel snaps off. This is not just work hardening. I wonder whether such a tough material wouldn't exert a greater tension when up to pitch which would go some way to negating the benefits of the lower tension Newtones?

I am not trying to butt in or take over.
I think it is a great idea and well done to PD for pushing this forward. However, the correct procedure, before anyone buys a set of these monel strings, is that they should be tested to see if they are worthy of someone spending their money on them, and whether they are worthy of making into a Newtone product.
When Newtone and I developed MM strings back in 1992, it took a lot of work and I tested quite a few variants before we settled on what became MM strings.
I'll have a chat to Neil about it on Monday.

No rush, but If it happens, I'd be happy to try a set or two. I prefer the nickel MM strings these days, and I'm curious what monel ones would sound and feel like.

Hello, I appreciate monel strings on flattops & would be interested in round core monel strings, especially .012/.054. If it can become real, I'd be curious to test a few sets on different guitars... Thanks for the idea !

Hi there !
I’d be happy to buy some sets to try too.
So far, I have tried Martin’s Retro monel strings (on my 1930 all-steel National Style “O”) and liked them. They do sound fairly different to phosphor-bronze strings. I didn’t NOT like them but haven’t figured out if I like them enough to switch from PB to them yet.
I have some acoustics with vintage Dearmond magnetic pickups - so am keen to see how they work with monel strings. Might give a less (too) aggressive tone with those pickups than I’m getting with standard nickel-wound wound strings.
All very interesting !!!’

All very interesting !!!’ That's my next trial Snakey - Martin Monels on my Sigma fitted with your old Dearmond 220. Hope to do it sometime during the week - I'll let you know what occurs. BTW, I passed through Glasgow a week ago and, from the car, I saw someone busking with a tricone somewhere around The Barras near The Peoples Palace. Couldn't stop to find out more. A pal of yours perhaps?

Love to try new strings. Have used the Martin's on an electric and have not had any problems. PT
