That seems to be priced in line with other Johnny Smith models on eBay, perhaps due to the modifications described in the auction (modified to add a seventh string, then subsequently restored it back to six strings).

As Chris said, it depends on the kind of gig and the kind of music you play. I can give examples for the shows my seven piece band plays, but I don't think they would necessarily apply to a single or duo act.

If you're talking about "fiddle tunes", the Old Time Jam website is an excellent resource. www.oldtimejam.comYou can choose which instruments you want to play against (guitar, banjo, fiddle) in any combination. I assume you already know about the Mandolin Cafe? www.mandolincafe.com

That isn't an unbranded Ricky. I don't recognize that maker at all. Looks interesting, though. The Aloha 8 string is relatively rare - I have only seen six string models before.

Those are cool sounding guitars with Supro-style pickups under the plastic hand rests. I had a chance to buy one for $299 USD a few years back, but the tuners were broken and I wasn't interested in trying to find custom replacements.

www.johnnydepprocks.com/Guitars has photos of his several resonator guitars and others. He actually started out as a musician before becoming more famous for his film work, sort of like Exene's ex-husband Viggo Mortenson.

They are a great band playing Mexican and American music. Ry is a big supporter of them, has used them on his albums and has guest starred on their albums. Here's a video that shows some of their work: www.loscenzontles.com/bandLos Cenzontles (Nahuatl for “The Mockingbirds”) dig deep into Latino traditions to promote dignity, pride and cultural understanding. The group has pioneered revivals of Mexican roots music in California bringing traditions to new generations. The Mockingbirds now create a powerful new hybrid sound – creating a fresh Chicano voice for a new generation. Fronting the group is the dynamic vocal dueto of Fabiola Trujillo and Lucina Rodriguez and sonero Hugo Arroyo . The Mockingbirds effortlessly mix electric bass and drums with traditional Mexican instruments – jarana, vihuela, requinto, pandero and quijada (jawbone) – creating a powerful contemporary sound infused with the gutsy soul of Mexico’s rural roots music. The group’s core members also operate Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. The Center has been training area youth in traditional Mexican music, dance, and crafts since 1994.

He was skinny, but appeared to be good otherwise. He played beautifully. I must add that the opening act, Los Centzontles, were as entertaining and musical as Mr. Cooder himself. I got right up front and stayed there the whole night. I have photos from both nights on my Facebook page. Let's see if this photo shows up: Apologies in advance if this doesn't display properly.

I don't believe Crafters of Tennessee is in business any more. Their website is blank, and if you search for that term you'll find several complaints with the Better Business Bureau about them.

I've heard the term VSO used for very inexpensive Asian made fiddles - VSO stands for "violin shaped object". Perhaps you have a RSO (resophonic shaped object)?
