Hi Damflask. If the paint on the guitar now is 'sound' i.e. not flaking or bubbling off then you're good to go. A good clean and a light sanding will do the job. I've used good quality water based paint with excellent results, don't need anything to exotic. Maybe use 2 shades of the same blue and break the finish so one shade shows through the other. It's basically like painting the front door. I've never noticed any detrimental change in tone, pretty much all guitars have some finish or other on them.
Good luck, pictures please!
Best wishes to you all, John

Bought my first resonator, a 1980's Regal Dobro style spider just from seeing it in a charity shop window. Made a deal through the shop letterbox as the shop didn't open for 20 minutes. Just as well, 'cos when the shop opened 2 other guys that had been in the day before rushed up to buy it! Knew enough about mechanicals to know how to stop rattling and loose bits. Found this forum and have never looked back. My point is that if I saw that guitar now with my gained 'knowledge'I might not buy it. Would have missed out on a nice guitar!
Best wishes to you all, John

You know the answer to that TT! We've all bought our first 'serious' guitar, it's always better to assure yourself it's a good 'un than to convince yourself afterwards that it is! I don't do facebook, but we've all seen stuff for sale that isn't what it says it is. Wasn't there a 'German silver' tricone mentioned the other week? Message from the luthier that built it saying otherwise helped in my decision making! Who knows, you might get a following as the 'guitar guy.'Lol! Best wishes to you all,John

Sorry Fred, I thought I'd read on the forum that 16's were the way to go on tricones! I've certainly put the Newtones' on mine.
Best wishes to you all, John .

Hi blueshome, agree with you that you don't need heavy strings just because it's a resonator. However I think it's generally agreed that if you are going to be sliding a lot, heavier strings are generally considered better for that purpose. Best wishes to you all, John

Hi Fred, I won't comment on the single cones other than I've found the Newtone 15's excellent. If you haven't tried them you're in for a treat! Put the 16's on the tri cone and watch out! I think you'll be amazed at the sound. If you don't know already (It's on the packaging) only trim the strings once they are tuned up on the guitar. Glad you're well, have fun!
Best wishes to you all, John

Hi damflask, just in case you may not be aware, coverplates have holes in different places. If they don't match up you'll have to drill new ones. Something to bear in mind. Good luck with your search.
Best wishes to you all, John
P.S. the holes would be drilled in the body, not the coverplate!

One comment if I may, I'm now re-watching on a larger screen and do find the stuffed deers bum a bit distracting!
