How does 1926 sound?.. Taken with permission from Les Cook's website at: www.GrassSkirt.co.uk this picture of Sam Ku West is with David Kina, the photo was taken in the Far East in 1926. This is before Sam got his tricone. .......................................................................Now, here he is, a very proud man with his new National tricone: The guitarist to Sam’s right is George Kalani Beck …not sure about the other guy but suspect it’s Tom Makaena. .......................................................................Finally, here is Dan Ku, playing his brother's National. Sam's younger brother Daniel, was a first class steel player in his own right .He accompanied Sam on the first stage of their 1928/29 tour of Asia, playing steel on Sam's harp numbers .This picture has been supplied by Dan's daughter, Althea. .......................................................................Mahalo to Les for sharing the pictures and information with us! Yes! That particular one, based on a German silver style N body and tricone neck, is currently lazing in the sun in Santa Barbera and has serial #A12.
I have a few more pictures of A12 which I added to notecannons under "single cones>lightning bolt" today. The owner is geting married today BTW! Hope the missus doesn't hit him over the head with it! He promised me better pictures a year ago, but I suspect he is 'otherwise occupied' ;D I'll bug him in a week or two....

Here is a style 5 tricone, Spanish neck, Serial 163. With, I'm told, a picture of Chris Antone, it's first owner. If anyone knows where this guitar is, may I please have a better picture of the name on the side. UPDATE: 2014. This guitar just resurfaced, and... The owner has had the name 'Chris Antone' crosshatched over to make it vanish!!
Ego... Eh!

A follow up from Paul Wheldon, he writes:
There is a picture of the same guy with the Beverly Hill Billies National playing a Lightning Bolt National. It does not have a white fingerboard though. It is on the cover of "White Country Blues 1926-1938 A Lighter Shade of Blue". Columbia C2K 47466.
Has anyone got a copy of that album? I can't trace the picture on the internet, although I can find track listings. If you know where a copy or the picture is please get in touch.
The lightning bolt single cone National that I have a few pictures of is apparently German Silver, I'll try and see if the owner can do me some better pictures which I'll put up here and at Notecannons for any one who hasn't seen one.

The mainly hidden National guitar was, I believe a 'lightning bolt' style 0 with MOTS fingerboard. (Anyone turned that one up yet?) I'm still not sure if these had a German silver or plated body so might actually be a 'lighning bolt style N???!!!) Sent in by Paul Wheldon. Thanks Paul!

Paul Wheldon just emailed me another half dozen pictures, I've added them to the notecannons homepage. One chosen at random from Michael's forum will now appear each time a visitor goes to that page. ( Depending on how your browser's cache is set up, you may see a different picture each time you return to the homepage, or only when you leave the site and return/refresh the page).
I'm going to post the new pictures here too once I've had a chance to change the resolution of the pics to make them more web friendly.
Aloha,
Colin
