I was lucky to play at jam sessions with him here in Leeds.
Loved hanging out and as well as recently buying his Ralph Bown ‘BBQ Bob 12 String,’ I had the pleasure of him bringing a Steve Evans (BELTONA) and Steve Phillips made resonator to check out at the jam sessions at The Tiny Tearooms in Rodley.
Sad about this as various Leeds friends are. We all genuinely loved his artistry, stories and life. I was actually near his house in Kirkstall with my son when I saw the news on Facebook.
Loved his music as a kid and couldn’t believe I was in the room with him when he turned up to a jam years back at the famous Grove Inn. Still voice some chords the way he did from watching his fingers when following tunes that first time.
He was telling tales about Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkinson last time I saw him.
RIP.

Hey all,
I’m looking for one of those ‘faux resonator’ guitars that were made in the 1920s/30s for a filming project.
The couple I’ve played were junk so I know they’re not good as instruments but it would help to get one cheaply to film with.
If anybody has one to move on let me know.
Thanks, Martyn

Martyn here.
I’m a pro doing 150+ gigs a year.
I use Clegg Gifford who are a broker that specialise in musicians/creatives etc.
I insure my gigging gear separately on a policy with them (2 PA’s, 3 Guitars, Banjo, Uke, Double Bass, Bass Amp, Foot Drums, Lights, Mixer) for when I’m out gigging as it amounts to around £15k replacement value. It’s about £4 a week. I also get 30 days EU cover per year too.
Everything else is itemised on household insurance and it’s my responsibility if I take the nice vintage stuff out of the house to keep it safe.
The company also does my public liability and car insurance which is considerably cheaper when listing occupation as ‘musician’ than all the usual comparison sites. Saves £100s.
Great to deal with and good value.
Might be an idea if you’ve got nice stuff that needs a specialist take on insuring.

Martyn here.
I bidded £1700 on it and was busy driving back from Oswestry (having bought a vintage Dobro) when it ended. If I’d not being driving I would have bidded a bit higher.
My thoughts were it would have a full rebuild and for another £500-ish on top I’d have a relatively rare and good quality instrument. In total any decent vintage National for under the £2.5k I’d have had in it and I’d doing well these days.
Damn annoying I missed out by £50. It’s probably somebody on here that got it! If so congratulations!
I’ll have to hold out for a wood Triolian now.

Sabrina AKA ‘Stardazed Trail’ is great along with being a great graphic artist that does superb blues inspired prints:

Don’t do it. You can’t get it to the same standard after. It’s an intact historical instrument. Preserve that history for the next generation. I’d rather you sell it to me and buy something with more shine!

Hi everyone Both parts of the interview were great . the knowledge that Mark has is a treasure ,especially for us coneheads ....i was hanging on every word.. Many thanks to martyn and jack for putting it together .... Best to you all al It’s our pleasure. We’d always wanted to find a way to preserve stories of peoples life in music and lockdown made us start the podcast. It actually costs us time and money but we’re both really proud of bringing this long held dream to life of facilitating interesting stories. Mark was very much in mind early on when formulating this format. This week we have a young 1920s styled singer jazz singer from Bristol called ‘Jack Calloway’ and his tale is both moving and incredibly interesting for what he had to do to make his dream come true and become a full time musician. I hope people go through all the different podcasts we’ve done and give them a try. Even if you’re a guitar player and we’re interviewing a drummer. All the people are picked because they’ve got salutary lessons to share. Season 3 will be recorded over the summer for an autumn release. We’ve got at least two big names in the resonator guitar world that will have incredible stories. Thanks!

A huge massive pleasure! I bet so many folks had zero idea of what actually went into that book. Incredible. I think I am probably the only person, apart from Mark's wife, June, that knows how much time, passion, commitment and sheer determination went into creating the book. After years of phone calls and conversations about its development through most of the 30 years, I then spent a few hours every day for three weeks on Skype with Mark proof-reading the whole book. I am not sure how many of us there are, but I have read "aloud" every single word in the book and examined every single illustration to make sure they are correct. It was a hard task and an honour. Shine On Michael. Even now I’m learning. Can’t believe you did those hours proof reading. Again, incredible and not cheap knowing your hourly rate. 😉

Watched both parts, fascinating, 30 odd years to write a book, that’s commitment. Seems a very nice chap and being similar age I can relate to some of his experiences. Thanks Washboard Resonators for this entertaining podcast. A huge massive pleasure! I bet so many folks had zero idea of what actually went into that book. Incredible.
