Hi Rob,
There should be some tension on the truss rod. I think your truss rod might just be loose and need tightening a bit. The tuners might be causing it, but without your guitar in my hands it is not easy to diagnose the problem.
You are doing all the right things. Let us know when it's all back together. Tighten up all screws on the guitar; tuners, truss rod cover, coverplate, tailpiece... but not over-tight, just enough.

It's quite unusual for tuners to be a cause of buzz/rattle, in my experience - sounds like the trussrod was under-tightened - if tightening doesn't fix it, it may also be a rattle from the truss-rod inside the neck; this happened on a guitar of mine once, & the remedy was to drill a small hole ( c 1/16" ) through the fingerboard ( next to a fret ) into the rod cavity, inject liquid rubber cement & then seal the hole with wood-dust/glue - actually a lot less scary than it sounds!

Thanks for all your input It was the truss rod. A quarter turn plus a pinch and Lightning is singing like a lark! Phew now for some honkin blues.
