Hi 5slide,
The iPhone with the Zoom iQ7 mic is perfect for Youtube videos. The mic can be twisted round so it either works as a stereo mic for audio, or as a stereo mic for video. Check the info on the Zoom website. With the phone on a Gorilla tripod it is an excellent way of filming with very good quality audio. The Rode i-XY mic is not designed for video, only audio, but it is extremely good. In fact it is a stunning little mic that can record as well as anything (24-bit 96kHz). I haven't tried the Rode mic that Harriet uses, but if it's made by Rode, I guarantee it is the dog's bollox! ...oops, I mean it's excellent.

I suggested to Bonzo that he tries the Tascam and plays it back through his amp connected to the line out jack with a suitable lead. This method works a treat when recording and playing back at rehearsals with a full electric band, 'specially if we bang it through my 100W valve bass set up with eq set flat. Seems so simple a method - record and play back just like the olden days, and there's plenty of other fancy stuff in there if you understand the lingo/pidgin/technospeak in which these modern manuals seem to be written. I'm sorry if I may upset some of you, but I prefer simple things and I still feel that the best recordings are done straight in, live, the whole band playing together simultaneously in one room with the vocals dubbed on afterwards. .....and don't get me started on "click tracks" and worrying about "overspill" y'hear?

PD, almost every album track I have recorded in the past 30 years were done completely live, including a live vocal. It is always better. I don't worry about mics overspilling (bleeding), or other sounds either. All of my recent album, Call Of The Blues, was recorded in a studio in Wood Green on a busy street with the windows open. We played totally live sitting very close to each other and there is bleed on every channel. No amount of equipment or super quality recording can achieve what a great vibe can.
Clicks tracks are the work of the devil!!!

I'm sure that when PD says he likes simple things he wasn't referring to the fact we seem to get along! I've looked at some of the apps suggested and I can definitely see them as a way to go. I can hook up a Hi Fi setup as good as anyone I know, having been shown over the years how to and having an idea of what I'm trying to achieve. But until today, after owning a mobile phone since the day after they were invented, I had never used headphones! I also only realized that you control the volume of the playback volume of the amp using the controls on the phone when playing recorded material. So as our leader Michael suggested earlier I can get everything l want using my phone and some interconnects I had knocking around the house! I've also been made aware by you guys of all the possibilities of home recording, something I shall look further into as my playing improves! This has got to be the best site around, from my first enquiry less than 24 hours ago I have a viable solution to my problem and an interest in finding out about a whole area of home recording I hardly knew existed. Thanks again everyone, you have my permission to go and pour yourselves a glass of something nice! Best wishes to you all, John
