Well, if it's that, metal, rapping or C&W, I'd choose SSS for a gig anyday. It's all subjective after all. Once you set yourself up to be under public scrutiny in the pursuit of pecuniary gain, you have take the slings and arrows of dissent as well as the hoped for approval, but I would be reluctant to describe someone's playing as 2nd rate from behind the sanctuary of a keyboard. To his or her face- yes, but even then only if I could demonstrate that I could do better. (I wont be holding my breath then!)
As for cultural appropriation, I'm not sure where I stand because I think I understand where the sentiment comes from, but the very suggestion that blue men shouldn't play the whites only cements existing barriers between different cultures and so IMHO, the notion should be buried. Especially amongst musicians who are usually unaffected by such outdated ignorance.
To quote mitchfit... $0.02! Other opinions are available etc. etc.

My objections were about the marketing people (and I guess SSS, as he hasn't corrected them) I can forgive a little hyperbole (is that the right word?) but as a Southern Blues player who came from Mississippi last year I think I should be getting a record deal, rather than some session player! PT Just got to go pick some cotton There is a 2 reels for the price of 1 at the supermarket

Surely the initials should be SS for Seasick Steve While SS does perform some blues based material, most of what I have seen and heard him play is rock, folk and gospel based material played on instruments that are mostly associated with the blues. I think he opened the doors on roots music and funky instruments for a whole generation of British teenagers. To have 20,000 kids jumping for more at Reading Festival is an achievement for a 60+ year old playing a three string guitar. It could only have worked in Britain, in the US he would not have been given the time of day, let alone 10 minutes on prime time TV. Clever boy! Ever since SS first appeared on British TV on 'Later with Jools Holland' there have been heated debates among older blues and roots aficionados about his music. Shine On Michael

Re cultural appropriation. This does not mean if you are white you cannot/should not play blues, whites have been playing blues from the beginning. The issue is giving credit and recognition the the roots of the blues in the African-american experience.
You can talk to many so-called young blues players and fans today (I do) and they think Eric and SRV and Hendrix are the roots. No doubt many of the 20,000 festival goers MM referred to above thought SSS is the real deal.

I had heard of him before this discussion, but hadn't paid much attention to him. He seems to be doing well for himself based on his tour schedule. He plays pretty good sized gigs, so I assume there are enough people who enjoy his music and don't really care about his background or whether or not he's "authentic" (whatever that means).
He doesn't seem to be trying to be the Next Savior of the Blues, or the Emperor of anything - he's just another musician trying to entertain and get paid.

Blueshome, you raise an interesting point.
In many ways the artists you mention and many others from the 1960s and 70s are the roots. While I can see that they are not Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters, I can also see that blues based music recorded between 30 and 60 years ago, is roots music for a younger generation than us. The music of artists such as Eric Clapton, Cream, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Doors ...etc, is as important as the Chicago Blues in the development and history of the blues. The blues music of that time is the roots music for many of today's artists. It seems weird to me too when a 30 year old talks about Rory as the beginning of it all, but then when I look at it from a younger person's perspective, I understand and accept it. Of course any serious player eventually finds their way back to the roots of the roots.

What ever we think of any performer it pays to remember that he's up there on the stage and your down there watching. I wonder why us Brits always seem to decry success. Unlike the USA where they applaud it.

My thoughts on the original post/article was that it was to expose publicity about SS(aka SL) as false. He has turned on many to The Blues, which must be a good thing, but as with Country music, it should be '3Chords and the Truth' PT

At the end of the day it all comes down to the music, do you like it or not? I mean ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons nickname should be 'Pinochio' NOT the 'Rev', There's trees that ain't as tall as most of his stories! Anyway I'm off to Wembley arena this Friday to see SS, I don't own any of his albums but I'm sure I'll thoroughly enjoy, live music and a beer what's not to like!!
