Hi Lewis, If it didn't sound dead with the previous E string, I reckon your string has unravelled. Breaking strings.... hmmm.... not sure about that. Looking at your photo.... you haven't wrapped enough string around the peg and the overlapping will cause your string to slip. I need to find some time, but I think a video is called for! Have another Easter egg and worry about it tomorrow Shine On Michael

Thanks for your response.
Hmmm I'll have another look at it. I've got another 56 which I can try out to see if it is any better. With the hole so close to the middle of the headstock I'm finding it very hard to wind the 6th and 1st strings the right way though, especially with the others already attached. I'll get used to it! A video would indeed be very good and helpful though :-)
I haven't had any eggs yet...time to rectify this situation!!
Cheers
L

Usually I loosen the 2nd string enough to push it out of the way of the first. I use Gaucho's guide for how long the string should be and bend it slightly at that place for all strings I capo the strings 2 to 6, and install the 1st to pitch. I take the capo off and adjust everything to pitch.
THen I go around 2,3,4 as normal.
Then I loosen the 5nd string enough to push it out of the way of the 6th I use Gaucho's guide for how long the string should be and bend it slightly at that place I capo the strings 1 to 5, and install the 6th to pitch. I take the capo off and adjust everything to pitch.
After the 6th is installed and everything is tuned right, I install the last 5th string.
Its probably a little longer routine but I haven't had problems and it usually stays in tune, and I think it might be one routine for those of us who might not be able to hold strings at a proper tension as they are installed.

To keep the tension while winding on the string I lift the guitar about half an inch with the string where the body joins the neck. It works for me.
