Stumbled across these webisodes on You Tube. This one of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys talking about slide playing in Open tunings is good!

Some interesting stuff in there, but I really wished they'd have tuned their guitars to standard pitch. The Open G part is way off.

Good post man, some very interesting stuff in there. A treat for me personally being a Black Keys fan, first time hearing Dan unplugged.

Hi Mickey,
Dan's guitar is tuned in concert pitch, but a semitone down in both tunings.

And here (to my ears, at least) is Auerbach playing some McDowell(-ish), this time in a musical context...
I happen to like it...

In the video I posted up top, does anyone know the name of the song Dan's playing at the 1 minute mark? I know the riff but can't place the song...

Hi Gaucho,
That is one of Fred McDowell's signature licks that turns up, with slight variations, on many of his recordings. Going' Down To The River and Germany Blues are two that spring to mind.
Shine On Michael.

Shine On Michael. Thanks Michael! I checked out Germany Blues and there it is! Let me ask this... I'm pretty sure he plays it in open D. If I can figure out an acceptable sounding version (I have actually) in Open G, am I missing out on anything? At this point in my fairly "young"playing days, I just stick with Open G (mostly in the key of F) so as not to confuse myself too much. I'm not all that bright, musically. I've figured out quite a few versions of Open D songs in open G but always wonder if I'm lacking anything.

Hi Gaucho, That lick is part of my DNA You can kind of play it in G tuning on strings 3, 4, and 5 (GDG). It works-'ish', but in my opinion you are missing a whole chunk of the way the licks rolls together. If I were you, I would start to work it up in D tuning. Are you missing anything by playing open D songs in open G? You can play any melody in any tuning or any key, but there are certain keys, tunings and chord shapes that lend themselves to particular styles. In regular tuning without a capo, for example, a blues in C is very different in character to a blues in E. It is the same with open tunings, some styles just suit a particular tuning. That licks of Fred's just sits perfectly in open D, and so many of his songs bounce off those notes in that tuning, that I have a feeling it might open a new door for you. Shine On Michael

I'm like Gaucho, I've been sticking to Open G lately because I found switching back and forth between the two tunings was getting too confusing. But there are a lot of open D songs I'd love to play, and I agree, they just don't sound quite right in Spanish (although I have a version of You Gotta Move in Spanish that I prefer to the open D version). Seems like Robert Wilkins plays in Vestapol a lot too, and he's one of my favorites.
Maybe we ought to start a new thread to get advice on how to make this multiple tunings thing work?
I know a lot of people keep different guitars for different tunings...but I've decided to just keep one resonator (for the time being, anyway).

Room for any negative comments? I don't like them... TT Depends on who "them" is. If you're talking about the Black Keys, check out Chulahoma, it's the best thing they've done in my opinion:
