...while we are on the subject of the forum, I have just upgraded the attachments limits to hold much more and bigger files. I hope it makes the forum more user friendly.

Mickeyz -That's not a fair comparison as the typeface, the line spacing and the anti-aliased type of the graphic is different. I prefer the first. Michael- I don't use tapatalk and I get the forum in colors

Hi Mickey,
What makes that post almost impossible to read for me is not the colours of the type and background, it is the lack of use of paragraphs. With correct spacing it would be legible in any colour.

It all started in 1990 when my album, Slidedance, was released in a red and black package. From that time onwards it has been my colour scheme

Harriet, I use the tapatalk app because it gives me easy access to all the administration functions. I do use Safari on my iPhone, but the app makes it so easy to administrate the forum

Thanks, Michael. Here's how it looks graphically to me on my ipad - I thought you might be interested - This not the size I see the type - this is just for the graphic look. Indeed 4mb attachments allowed! Lawd lawdy, H

Hi Mickey, What makes that post almost impossible to read for me is not the colours of the type and background, it is the lack of use of paragraphs. With correct spacing it would be legible in any colour. Shine On Michael Oh, I removed the paragraphs on purpose, just to see what a huge block of text looks like. For me, it's much easier to read with a light background... but again, it's not that big of a deal. Single lines of text aren't too difficult. I've got new glasses now, that helps a bit too. Anyway, proboards should allow the user to choose their own color preferences. Maybe they do? I'll have to check again. Edit: Actually, it looks like the forum admin can create alternate skins so the user has the choice: www.proboards.com/forum-help-guide/forum-skins-and-colors (but I don't know which version of proboards this forum is using)

Hi Mickey,
I don't think you can change the skin, only I can do that. If you have a tablet/iPad etc.. use the Tapatalk/Proboards App, then it is just plain black type on a white background.
The thing that worries me more than the colour, is that after so many years the forum has has become one of the best repositories of information about resonator guitars and slide playing on the Internet, and it is all sitting in a folder somewhere out there in Proboardland. If they go down, it would all disappear.

The risk isn't only server failure -- one site I used to visit a lot was acquired by a media company, which ultimately revised its strategy and just pulled the plug on the site altogether. Archive.org is a great resource too, but their site scans are spotty. Looks like they only scanned this forum twice -- once in 2011, again in 2014 -- and they only preserved the subjects, not the entire threads.

So far as I'm aware, there is no way to archive the whole forum. We can thank Proboards for that. I have that on good authority from a number of "tech savvy" mods on another Proboards forum. It is possible to set up robot software to do it, but this would be detected by Proboards and blocked.
It would be possible to copy and paste every post in every thread manually, but you'd need to set a cut-off point and work back otherwise you'd not keep abreast of new postings, moreover, you'd need some way to make it all accessible again. Backing up posts on a daily basis would be necessary too just to keep up to date.
This has a bearing on the admin's choices should he or she wish to change provider. To my mind it is similar to how you could not change your mobile 'phone provider without losing your number until number porting was made compulsory. It is anti competitive, or it would be if the forum was not free to host.
Archiving would be a labour of love. Any takers to carry out a manual back up?

I'm not tech savvy enough or have the kit / digital memory to do it all. However, on another site I frequent, various users took on individual subjects to build up a Wiki of amplifiers by type. Could this be a way of doing it? i.e. share the load? Just an idea from an ol' git who would be willing to help.

I'm dependent on other forums and discussions for my understanding of this and any part of it may turn out to be mistaken, plus I don't have all of the details, and am anyway pretty certain that others here will understand it all better than me... Obviously, anyone who does know better please correct me... all that said, I believe the situation is roughly like this:
Individual users / members can export their own content, but no-one other than proboards can back-up the whole of a proboards forum.
Proboards do do backups and so should be able to reload a recent version of a forum in the event of a server problem. There are ways to export all the data to form an independent copy, but the only one that doesn't violate the terms of service one agrees to when setting up a proboards forum, involves switching to the pay-for-it branch of the proboards enterprise (forums.net) and paying for it for 6 months, at which point the export option becomes available...
I've no idea how much 6 months on forums.net would cost or what other disadvantages there might be, but in addition to the long hard labour of love of culling info for wiki pages and then writing them (I'd help, if wanted) it would be at least theoretically possible to have a whip round to raise money for moving to an export (kickstarter-type thingy??)

I've thought about youtube playlists of what members are listening to, working on...
I'm not really exactly sure how the programming works but it may be that whatever is typed wordwise in, our names, associated profiles might just be in cyberspace and the only time they are visible on a web page is when its called upon - like when you click on a topic there are scripts that assemble everything on a page along with any jpgs and videos that you see and when you go off that page it goes back in cyberspace so backing it up you have to back up the scripts and all the parts.
