A friend has just bought this 1997 Dobro , made for Kid Ramos, and signed by the rest of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He wants to play it AND try not to rub off the names. Any ideas??? Its a sort of National Westwood/ValPro guitar, with Gibson bits (though the truss rod is not Gibson made) Bits of it are very `hand made`, with router marks and large packers in the neck pocket. PT

THere may be some ideas in these but I think they will have to be redone occasionally if any of these are of use and would need to set to harden. Palm haze I have found is best removed the same way you spit shine a boot.
Turtle wax Krylon spray fixative Several coats of clear gloss guitar laquer
Or take it to an automotive finisher?

I do like things to be long-lasting. The problem (I think) is that the guitar has been handled, polished and sweated on for almost 20years and to spray/varnish over the dirt is not good practice and cleaning will remove some (or all?) of the names. PT

you can get a self clinging clear plastic for making scratch plates with (about 0.5mm thick). It wouldn't stretch around the contour but you could cut a seperate piece for that edge!

You might get some ideas by typing in "preserving an autograph on a guitar". This is being stored away from the sun I hope. One person thought that the pen might be absorbed into the finish on theirs.
Good luck!

That is a very cool guitar. Does anyone know how many like that were made?
Did some research.... a few dozen Val Pro juniors (smaller body), as well as standard size, were made by OMI when owned by Gibson in late 90's...

It looks something like an old National MAP guitar from '58 - '64, made by Valco. Eastwood makes a modern copy under the Airline brand with slightly different appointments and this is obviously not one of them. Your guitar is very unique.

I`m told this was a `Custom Made` job by Dobro/Gibson. The wiring and pot are not Gibson , the truss rod is not Gibson and the head is glued onto the neck (not a `Gibson thing`) PT

From what I have learned in the past 24 hours, the above guitar, made for Kid Ramos, as well as a score or so more we're made as the OP states by OMI in Huntington Beach CA, which was purchased and subsequently gutted by Gibson in the 90's. Operations were moved to Nashville in 1997 and any creativity that once existed was neutralized...
