A removable cone protecting device would be my choice too, but the fact is that for any number of reasons it would get left off and despair would inevitably ensue eventually. It's a bit of a hassle, but think of it as insurance. Personally, I use all three of my Shubb capos to hold the strings from unravelling off the machine head capstans, and loosen the strings just enough to release the ball ends. I can then whip off the cover plate easily. It's not that much of a nuisance really.

Removing the hand-rest should be a quick job, they are just soldered on (some steel c/ps may be spot welded, if you can't tell the difference stop now). The problem is the heat damage to the paint (on the Blues) or the flaking off of the plating (on a Lightning). It might be a good idea to get or make a temporary cover, without a hand rest if you have more than 1or2 Resonator to work on. When Busker Guitars set up MM stuff, Robin had a 'chopped-up' cover he could slip under the strings when doing a full set up. PT

This is what I do as well, and it works for me, too... yet I'd like far better a removable hand rest on the cover plate

Another trick ,to stop strings getting twisted is to get some Velcro about 3" long, and put it around the strings in front of the bridge before you remove them. This helps to keep them together. PT

Michael, earlier is this thread you mention that you can get a coverplate with removable handrest from your manufacturer in China. would it be possible to get one to fit a Blues 28?

Hi Oldpicker,
I have never actually ordered one of these coverplates, so I need to check first. Unfortunately my next shipment has just been sent, so I would have to get it sent separately which could be costly. I'll check it out for you.

Thank you Michael. There's no rush. Stew-Mac list one, item #1657 price $49.95. Do you know if that would fit?

Hi Oldpicker,
It will be a slightly different shape and that could change the break angle. Also, you might need to fill the screw holes because they may not line up with the new coverplate.
I am hoping that my manufacturers in Shanghai have put one in the shipment that is due to leave this week. If not, I will have to get one mailed to me. Don't worry, we'll get one. Let's discuss the price on a PM or email.
A couple of years ago I had a new Fine Resophonic coverplate fitted on my koa FR, because the old one was looking pretty worn. I had to change it back to the original one because even though it was made by the same person on the same mould as the original in 1998, it was a slightly different shape and the break angle was too shallow.
Best wishes

Interesting! I started this thread ages ago! I have 2 Gretsch resonators, and removed the hand rests. At once I felt more relaxed playing them - but - several months later I replaced them - and they sound better - somehow more balanced.

Hi Oldpicker,
We just caught them in time, you will have a coverplate in around 7 weeks from now.
I just looked at the Stewmac one. It is a completely different shape. I don't know where they are getting those from, but it is not from the Shanghai Reso-network.
