This guitar has been known of for some years. It is a Don body (slightly deeper than a style 0, also German Silver). It is stamped X143 in the bottom of the body. Most Dons were stamped with serials before they were made into guitars. At that point, it seems to have been put onto the Style 0 line and plated and sandblasted with hawaiian scenes. It was originally fitted with a square neck by National and a brass chicken foot coverplate. However, at some stage in the recent past, the neck was removed and a NRP round neck fitted.
So - what is it? Your guess is as good as mine. It would seem to have sound attributes of a Don - larger body, German silver but with lower quality decoration. In my opinion, it lost its original credibility when it lost its "original" National square neck. As a working instrument, with its new neck, it probably is quite a catch. What its value is, though, I wouldn't like to say! It's a good talking point though. Best Mark
PS You'll find it listed in my book in the Don section of my serial number list - not because it's a fully complete Don, but where else can it go?? I suspect there is no other Don in existence with that number.

I see you found my listing! It's my understanding from the previous owner that National Resophonic confirmed it is indeed German silver. I had the same question, I wasn't sure if I should even put Don in the headline. Very cool guitar though, I'm on the fence about selling it.
Update: pulling this listing until I can more accurately determine and describe what it is I'm selling.
