Hi guys
As you have probably seen, I have been selling my 1971 OMI Dobro 33D in tin can alley and although I'm still open to offers I have been thinking long and hard about it. It sounds freaking awesome!! I tried a NRP Delphi yesterday and sound wise it just didn't compare. However the reason I have been looking at replacing mine is because the nut width is just too small for me, I want a more national style neck.
At the moment this is just a hypothetical question but I have been wondering about the possibilities of replacing the neck, this brings up several questions though:
From what I understand good resonators have a bolt on neck? Is that right? Does this mean it is as simple as opening the guitar up, undoing a bolt and taking it off or is there more to it than that? (I'm aware I may be being massively naive
Last thing I want to do is irreparably modify a vintage guitar so could I easily put the old neck back on if I wanted to?
Are there a lot of variations in measurements? Do I need something custom built for the guitar or could I take maybe an MM neck (if it's possible to get one?), or an NRP neck or something similar and attach it?
I have no experience working on guitars, if I could get an existing neck, can I do any of this myself or does it require a lot of knowledge and tools? I know I would certainly need a professional setup after.
Would I need to replace anything else? I'm assuming this would modify the string spacing at the bridge?
Has anyone done anything like this before? Any ideas of what it may cost?
Do you need any more info about the instrument to answer these questions?
And lastly, am I out of my mind?
Sorry, I know that is a lot of questions but I want to know what I'm getting myself in to before I seriously consider this!!
Thank you so much in advance.
All the best
David
