I have one of these. But I bought it when I was just starting to get into the slide -- it's definitely not for a beginner. I found it very awkward to use, and uncomfortable because of my wedding band. It's quite heavy, which might work for the tone, but requires heavy strings and high action. The idea behind it is that you can flip it out of the way when you're not playing slide. It's possible with practice that gets easy to do, I found it impossible. Still, it wasn't expensive at all. Maybe I'll dig it out again.

That is pretty neat... I keep thinking that an interesting enhancement to a slide would be a small, string diameter groove placed strategically on the tip or edge, to allow one to ride on a single string when desired... Anyone think that would work?

HI Fredcapo - I think a groove would create problems, you'd have to line the slide up with it and it might interfere or pinch the note, and interfere differently with a vibrato.
Hi Mikeyz -I am prepared for it to be heavy and will test it on a both heavy strings and not, and I am prepared not to be playing fast. Thanks for the tips. It may require a special set up to come remotely close to the sound he's got on his demo - He's using thick strings tuned low on a ladder braced stella type. Don't know as I have a fire in the belly to go to alot of trouble for it like its the answer to everything if I get the set up right.... but I don't have anything at this point to play in knife style with so its worth a shot.

Well, this thread inspired me to break out the slide again -- a few months of slide playing have definitely made a big difference since I bought it. It also helps that I just restrung the guitar with heavy strings.
I'm sure a better player than myself can figure out how to flip it to be able fret and slide at the same time, but for me it works best for the slide-only songs I'm working on. But I think it has the potential for being more precise than a regular slide - it has a curved tip that lets you dip it to get to the lower strings, but stays out of the way so you can focus just on the high string. Which makes a lot of sense. Nice full sound -- fuller than the glass Dunlop I usually use.
So yeah, NOT a beginner's slide (I still consider myself a beginner), but probably a great tool for a more advanced player.

I remember John Jackson had something like this that he played `knife style` slide with. Someone may have a photo somewhere, I think a friend made it for him?? PT

In some tunes, I'll need my three remaining fingers to fret chords - looks impossible with this. TT

I think its meant to be used for material that is slide throughout, like selections of Blind Willie or perhaps Mance Lipscomb, Robert Wilkins. Looked but though no photos other than a painting there's footage of John Jackson playing lapstyle on a Guitar videos collection - but I don't have that

I'm pretty sure I saw a demo on youtube at the time I bought it where a youngish kid was casually flipping the slide back and forth, depending on what he was playing. So it's definitely possible. Although I'm more on the "ish" side of young at this point....

Thanks Mickeyz - Duh it is the John Pearse slide you have- but I would not use it the way the way the kid demonstrating it does. I thought it was something that Speal manufactured as I did not look closely at the photo or the copy where it says right there- I just looked at a part of the video, liked the sound and went for it! Duh! Duh!
So I am not as optimistic - I don't get on with most of John Pearse but occasionally his strings work out for me.
The youtube makes an occasional chirping noise I thought my smoke alarm was dying :
I like what Shane does with it on his special set up.

Yep, that's the one.
I played around with this slide for a bit last night. It's not bad, and it has a sound of its own. I was able to flip it, sort of, using the index and middle fingers to fret with.
But I still prefer the sound and feel of my glass slide.

Mine arrived today and I wasn't able to hold it the way it is demoed between the fingers so I tried it as a lap slide and I think it will work that way for me, it sounded really good, and the bass was pretty much in the ball park of the sounds of the first demo. I tested it on my minolian set up with MM 16-56 nickel strings @ C# vestapol.
Plan on attempting a setup similar to the first video and if works out I'll post.
