Hi again !
Looks like to me, perhaps he has strings 1,2, and 4 doubled on one guitar on his flat-top,roundhole acoustic and strings 1,3 and 4 doubled on his archtop acoustic guitar ! What do y'all think ?

Perhaps he was experimenting and possibly was not strictly thinking in terms of pairs...just notes or coming up with a unique sound...or as someone suggested just trying to confound players so they could not copy him. Seems he accomplished that. Thanks to all for their interest...gives me something to do while snowed-in in New Jersey...

Just got "I GOT WILD" coincidentally has a great shot of his Sovereign - with a 3-on-a-plate tacked to the top - IMHO sheer genius. Thought forum members might be interested.

Thanks. Yes that is how he did it. I have seen similar pix... I really like the effect of the 9 strings (as opposed to the pure 12 string sound) but can't come to grips with the hack job (sorry Big Joe) to the headstock... Though I may do it... I have a 12 on the workbench that when it s repaired I may string up as 9...

I also like the way he appears to have simply threaded two strings through the tailpiece and separated them on the bridge.

4000 Euros!!! Big Joe would love that. The seller can't be serious. If it was priced at around 400 Euros, it would be fine.

Going back to the tuning point made by snakehips, yes he tuned to Spanish, but he would sometimes drop the sixth string from D all the way down to B. I asked him once about this and he wouldn't tell me his secret. Fortunately he went on his break and I was able to pluck each course of strings and work this out.

The listing is gone presently. eBay asking prices are often good for a chuckle... I have several 12 string projects underway but have not yet tried any 9 string-ing. I do have a cheapo guitar that would make an interesting project, but instead set it up as a Nashville strung 6. Maybe I will try out my Gibson B25-12 as a 9-er. It sure sounded great sliding in open D as a 12, but I detected the top starting to buckle again. Need to reexamine and possibly add a brace.

It's a tight squeeze, but you can use banjo m/heads in between standard m/heads on a slotted headstock. A small brass plate might have to be made, but you could have 9 or 10 strings on a Lightning or similar without any cutting. PT That chopped Stella is very expensive, but there are a lot of very rich people out there.
