At Resosummit in Nashville this year, I was talking to Tim Scheerhorn and he showed me the two cones pictured below. The cone on the left came from Mike Auldridge's original Dobro® and was used on his solo recordings and recordings with the Seldom Scene. The cone on the right came from Jerry Douglas' R.Q. Jones guitar and was used during the Bluegrass Sessions and many other recordings. Mike Auldridge had written on his cone every time he took the cone out and replaced it. It was pretty battered, to say the least.  |

The cone on the left looks over-tensioned. I always found that enough tension on the screw to distort the cone like that (even over time), is adjusting the cone/spider past it's sweet spot. I guess Mike Auldridge might disagree. Is that a vintage cone (The cone on the left came from Mike Auldridge's original Dobro®)?

Yes, it's the original cone. It's been taken out and put back in several times based on the dates written on the cone.

It looks spun. I am used to seeing the four holes on stamped versions. It would be interesting to reshape it and see what it sounds like.

I have a spun 4 hole cone , I got it through a UK music shop, from Dobro, in the mid `70s
(It has yet to go on a guitar!) The holes seem a bad idea, I guess everyone else thought that ,as I have not seen them on other makes, or more modern Dobro cones

I`m sure the `over-tensioning` could be re-shaped, I`ve seen worse. I think the rim of a Dobro cone is the important bit, whereas on a single cone the whole thing is structural , and dents can make it fail.

Vintage cone must be 10,1/2
While Jerry,s Quarterman 10,9/16.
But in the picture it seems to dwarf Mikes cone.
