Hi
My Lightening has MM Phos. Bronze .015-.056 and is played Open D and Open G very happily.
On the back of the packet of strings it says ". . . . . whether you play in regular or in open tunings" i am having a senior moment here, is it okay to play in EADGBE as well?
Kind regards Steve

I use the .015" MM nickel set and play in standard tuning nearly as much as the slacker open tunings. You soon get used to it, it's character building...Everyone's fingers get sore when they begin to learn guitar- even with nylon on a classical, you just go through it again and it's not nearly so bad. Stevie Ray Vaughn certainly suffered for his art!

Hi Steve,
It is absolutely fine to play in standard tuning with those strings. Ideally for standard you would use 13/56, bug the 15 is fine.

Or you can use a set of 13-56 and tune up for open tunings. A in Spanish and E in Vestapol. You still get more bite from a 15 top though. All the other strings are the same (I think) as a set of MM 15s.
After experimenting with 16s (great tone and volume), I have gone back to 13s and tuning up. My littel fingers can't cope with string bending 16s in standard tuning.
Talking of ouch string guages: Blues Week 2012. I think I heard Steve Phillips correctly when he said he had 20-76 on his 12 string (albeit tuned down to B)! As Muddy would have said: Ain't that a man?

I use MM phos. Bronze 15's but tune to standard - 1 tone ie same intervals but bottom E goes to D etc. It also has the benefit of allowing me to sing in tune(?) haha.

Just to clarify for myself as well.... I have my blues strung 15 - 56 and use it in standard, open D & open G. Are these strings OK for occasional open E (returning to standard afterwards)or should I drop a 'size' to be on the safe side?
I'm aware of using a capo in open D & G to replicate E & A but sometimes it's nice not to have to slide over the body, so to speak! I know this question gets asked a lot but once more won't hurt...

Hi Jreading. Michael is the authority but as I understand it, the Newtone MM 15s are the same guages for the 2nd through to 6th strings as the 13s. The only difference being the top string. Therefore, you should be fine tuning up to open E or A without putting too much pressure on the cone. I have done it without dire consequences (yet). You can by plain 13s if you are worried about tuning up the 15 top.
My only reflection is that going from standard, to E, to A and back a lot tends to put a lot of strain on the wound 3rd and I find it is the first to go ping when retuning. Worth having some spares if you do this a lot at gigs.

Stevie Ray Vaughn certainly suffered for his art! e&oe Didn't SRV play in 'standard', but with all strings tuned down one pitch, ie with D# on the bottom/top?

It wouldn't surprise me if he did (meaning the old brain only retains some of what it has been subjected to and no googling has been done!) As I said, the 0.015" MM set gets played in standard tuning a lot here. When I first got my MMB, I OD'd on it and I played nearly everything with it, including some simple flamenco and old classical pieces from when I started out. I soon got used to it. It's not very easy to bend notes on a 0.015" set as anyone would agree, but it's not impossible, you just get used to the limitations and either live with it or push the boundaries occasionally. What I was referring to was the (possibly rumoured?) reports of his fingers bleeding and nefarious acts with Cyano glue!
