Hi all, I have a Regal RC-51 tricone that has had a National slimline humbucker for a few years. I had it located up against the neck, but I realized that the strings tend bounce off the p/u when I'm in the upper registers. I hesitate to have the action messed with because it plays like a dream. I tried moving it to a more "middle" position, which worked out action-wise, but now when I use a thumbpick I continually bang it off the p/u. For both of these positions the wire was coming out of the lowest, most inside located hole (If you're looking at it straight on, it would be the lowest left hole on the treble side. So I'm thinking maybe I can move it to a bridge position, but I can't have the wire running down the front of the guitar. But, having opened up the beast, i have to ask myself: is it a) wise to drill a big-ass hole in the pan on which the cones sit, b) where would be the best place to drill it and c) then where would I run the wire? there's not much room between the T-bar and the spaces around it. Plus I'm not all that entirely mechanical. But i do own a drill and several hammers! Is this a sign I should maybe get a Highlander and have somebody who knows what they're doing install it? (like I originally did with the humbucker) I appreciate any thoughts or ideas on this. Thanks, dave

Hi bluesbear,
I'm in Peru, Illinois, about 100 miles west of Chicago. I have had Rick Cremer in Aurora do my reso setups in the past. Just wasn't sure if this was going to require his assistance or not for this one. admittedly, I conceived the project having forgotten what the insides of the guitar look like...
thanks, dave

Is the national slimline thicker than a lace ultraslim? (I could google it but its your thread). If so, that might be an option. TT

Deuce, it turns out that googling "National Slimline vs Lace" brought me back to this site! So the Nat is 5.5 mm tall, and the Lace is 7 mm. Apparently there is also the Flatbucker, but it's also 5.5 mm . But thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll just go put it back together and see if I can adjust my technique to make the middle position work and save my pennies for an actual National...

Hi there !
You could drill a hole into the side wall of the well/pan for your cable. Keep it fairly high (ie. close to the guitar top) so that the cable stays as far above the resonator cones, to never rattle against them. How about placing the pickup more towards the bridge then ?
Always tape the test pickup and cable and jack socket etc to your guitar EXTERNALLY, while you test for sound and playability BEFORE you decide to make any permanent alterations, additions, or start drilling things. Place the jack socket over one of the grill holes if you don't want a hole drilled into the guitar for the socket.

Hi snakehips, actually it's been installed/hard wired in the guitar for a few years, I just started moving it around. The wire goes to a jack in the lower bout already. Also, National gives you this awesome 3M double sided tape for securing the p/u, and it holds like a bastard. This whole project relates to me wanting to move it to the bridge position. Maybe. I was curious about the drilling a hole idea, becuase I couldn't see any way around doing that.
thanks a bunch! dave
