Hey all, hope all is well with everybody My next little endeavor is getting one of my Latch lake Acoustaglide slides sent off to the guy who plates Elderly Instruments picks & steels for a cobalt plating. I purchased some of the Cobalt plated picks, out of curiosity, and they are definitely smoother feeling & have less play noise than other metal picks (I still prefer my old worn out bakelite fingerpicks) but I thought it may transfer well to a slide, Will only cost 10$ + shipping both ways, but I thought it was worth a whirl. Anyone of you sliders have this done before? Results? I've read some good things on some steel oriented forums but nothing from bottleneckers. My initial thoughts are it may have less string noise, but my reservation is it may also change the tonal character of the brass as well. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hey Danny! For ten bucks is always worth a try, but I wouldn't use your favorite brass slide - try a spare first because it certainly will change the tone, and if you get a result ~ send your favorite for a 'makeover' Slide On! Ian.

Ian. Hi Ian! Thanks for your reply That is definitely the plan, I recently got a 2nd Acoustaglide to keep in the car and thought it would be a good opportunity to A/B them. I'm thinking it may make it sound a bit brighter, like a chrome plated slide. I am pretty surprised by the picks, the cobalt plating makes a difference, I also wonder how long the plating will last. Will report the results

Hey - I'd love to know more about your cobalt metal picks.
I'm developing some prototype tungsten carbide picks at the moment, and would love any feedback as to what could be made better on metal picks in general (I have no interest in competing with other pick manufacturers, so am concentrating on hard metals, alongside the tungsten carbide slides).

Received the slide yesterday... he did a great job and it's just what I was hoping. Very smooth and silky on the strings The tone didn't change a whole lot, maybe a bit less 'bell-like' tone than the regular brass pulls out of the Estralita... The plated one seems to sound best on the Tricone. Now we'll give her a few years of playing and see how the plating holds up Attachments:

Well... Last night after about a week of pretty heavy use, I noticed the cobalt plating is very lightly starting to rub off on the playing end right beneath the tip of my pinky... don't think that it will make it for the long haul for sure... Oh well, a back up to keep in the car it is! Nothing ventured as they say.... Good thing it was more of a curiosity than a need... I do have a couple of superb German Silver Daddy Slides from Jan, another old Acoustaglide, as well as some beautiful Diamond Bottlenecks to keep me sliding!

Danny, if you like it smooth, try hitting it with a shot of Lemon Pledge once in awhile. Wipe it on, let it dry for a few seconds and buff it off. Smooth as silk! Smells good too….

UPDATE Went ahead & sent the slide back for a second plating in a stronger solution.... (no charge) Sounds great, like a brighter, more shimmery brass, but not as bright as steel... and is absolutely smooth with almost no string noise at all, a nice one for the collection.

Interesting...
My slide of choice for quite some time now is a bronze sleeve that you get in the parts section of any hardware store for about six dollars. Typical slide size but it has a texture, which means just moving it on the strings creates a sound. It's pretty substantial and I really like it. Wonder what plating might do for it?

Hey Billy, Not sure... it would probably have to be polished up for the plating to adhere well... Get another 6$ tube & let us know how it goes!

I probably have 12 or so kicking around in various guitar cases, the car, etc. so I wouldn't miss it if one went to be plated!
