I'm right-handed. Is it possible to play slide using just the slide on the left hand with no left-hand fingering at all? Cheers

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if you can play slide only with no fretted notes. The answer to that is yes, definitely. There were plenty of old time players who used only slide. You will not be able to get the unique, complex chords that you hear in a lot of the songs (like Robert Johnson songs for example) but passable versions are playable. In fact, part of the fun of learning is figuring out how to play fretted passages using slide only. I started out that way, having no musical background at all. I can play lots of songs and it's a ton of fun. The longer you stick with it, you will almost automatically start to pick up some fretted notes and riffs. There are many parts of songs that will will never be able to play note-for-note using only slide, but that's not a deal breaker. Just have fun with it!

Hi Jonothan,
Welcome to our forum.
Gaucho's advice is spot on. If you want to play slide guitar exclusively with no fretted notes at all, you should probably watch how lap steel guitarists and country Dobro players play (not pedal steel, just 6 string lap steel) and adapt what you see to playing in the bottleneck style. I went through a period around 25 years ago where I only played lap steel, so I adapted everything I knew to work for me in this style. There are no rules to stick to, but there are logical ways of approaching things.
By using the open strings, pairs of strings and playing parts of chords, rather than the whole chord, everything is right there on the fretboard.
As Gaucho has said.....Have fun!

Hey Gaucho and Michael - thanks for your encouraging responses. I play a little dobro by rote using tab - I've bought some lessons from an excellent dobro site called lessonswithtroy(dot)com - but there's nothing like the sound of a slide. Michael, I ordered your slide DVD so I look forward to receiving it shortly. Kia ora, Jonothan
