With the beautiful Alice Gregory on the Isle of Man earlier this year.... Alice's dad, John, plays guitar and I could tell from being at their home for ten minutes that I could hand Alice my precious Fine Resophonic and not worry. Shine On Michael

I have a the most clumsy dog in the world ,he gets distracted and walks into walls, goes rushing to the door and head butts it as he cant stop& throws his toys all over the place(he will be fine when he gets a bit older but at the moment they stay in there cases within easy reach)

Just to really spell it out, those things are built like f***ing tanks, store it wherever you want, just make sure you play it. They are sad tp hear for e first 20 minutes if they've not been loved in a while.

About ten years ago, I bought a Yamaha Pacifica 904, part funded by a Christmas club at work and the rest by best beloved as a present. Too large and awkward to wrap, it was set aside and then brought out at Xmas with a ribbon on and placed in front of the tree. She was working Xmas eve at the hospital and came home early Xmas morning. The dog, desperate to find a "present" for her, picked up a stone* off the floor to give to her and when she looked into her pocket for a dog treat, the dog spat the stone out neatly onto my new prize. I was mortified but she said one day it would remind me of the dog. Well the dog's gone now (and it is only a little dent really) and I can see that she was right in retrospect. I'm in no way advocating letting instrument damage be an acceptable norm- just that the glass can be half full too (although I always say that the glass is too big!) Mine are upstairs, hanging on the middle bedroom wall and the rest are on auto-grab stands. Only a few live in cases- the solid timber ones basically. I'm lucky to have this arrangement. I gloat at them every time I'm in the room! They do get dusty! (I even play them sometimes...)
I say ditch the mothballs and leave your instruments out (but dig a moat with ramparts and set up a machine gun emplacement!)
* There were stones everywhere around the house with that dog.

Yes, give children access to instruments and let instruments be part of family life - I absolutely agree - but also do be aware that it can go wrong, and sometimes does. I saw the whole thing: happy son and guitar interaction, slight slip, guitar falling, headstock off. Nobody's fault (but mine?)

I love the fact my boy is growing up around music! I regularly encourage him to play on my guitar weather its on its stand or on my lap. He even has an old ukulele in his play area that he loves! Maybe i'm just being over-protective of my brand new delta. Thanks for everyones inputs, its great to hear!

The only guitars I keep in cases are the ones I don't play much, and as such are probably going to be sold. The case that came with my MM Blues spends nearly all its time empty, or storing other guitar bags and stuff.
All my guitars hang on walls all over my house, and as such they get played. Sometimes for a short spell while waiting for kettles to boil, or baths to run.
I have been known to cook meals with a guitar slung round my shoulders!!
Walls are guitar storage in my house, stands are too risky with teenagers/cats around;-)
My better half even chooses which walls certain guitars go on too.
I find that guitars on walls get played more.

Cases are for transportation. How will your guitar ever acquire a decent-sized hairball inside its cone sitting in a case??

You want to be careful leaving those instuments out at night. You never know what might happen.
But seriously. When i got my new guitar last year.I was cousious of every move i made with it.Was being a bit stupid about it really, until i put my first ding in it, oh dear : - ( Then i relaxed !

If your guitar doesn't have a ding in it, you're not playing it enough.
