This was posted by Mark Makin on Facebook a few minutes ago. Talk about 'the one that got away'! I don't know how many people are aware of this but......3 days ago, this round neck Style 4 Chrysanthemum (number S5057) was sold anonymously on ebay and went for $9500 (£5500 UK). It just happens to be the guitar owned by Johnny Winter and used on the "Nothing But The Blues" album cover. In the light of the sad news today, I'm wondering if the buyer knows what he has bought! --------------------- Shine On Michael

Let's be clear about something before legend and myth take over from the facts. This is without any doubt the guitar that Johnny was photographed with for the front and back cover of his 1977 album, 'Nothin' But The Blues'. However, it was only used for the photo session; there are two songs on the album that feature Johnny playing a National guitar, 'Bladie Mae' and 'TV Mama', and neither of these songs sound to me like they are played on a Tricone, they are both played on a single cone steel bodied National, probably the Duolian that we have seen in other photos. The style 4 Tricone was only used for the photo session. It's a great photo and along with 'The Progressive Blues Experiment' it was one of the catalysts that inspired thousands of people, including me, to go out and buy a National guitar.

Hi there !
Johnny Winter is pictured in the great album he did with Sonny Terry, with a metal Dobro guitar. I don"t have my album to hand to check what model/era the Dobro is from though.
It certainly sounds similar (to my memory at least) as the acoustic resonator stuff he recorded on Muddy Wayers' album(s)

The Sonny Terry album was recorded with an OMI 33 that was set up for regular playing. I don't think that is the guitar on TV Mama, Bladie Mae, I Can't Be Satisfied, I Feel Like Going Home. I believe those were recorded with a Duolian, probably the stripped one in the photos. I think it's on the 3rd Degree album cover.
