Hi,
Has anyone tried mixing phosphor bronze and nickel strings on their resonator?
I'm currently waiting for some nickel MM 16 - 59s for my Triolian and ever the one to try new things thought about putting PB strings in the 6,5,4 positions.
The Nickel 3rd string calms down my Triolian which has a big mid range punch and suits it well.
I've seem a lighter mixed acoustic set on Malcolm Newtons website which is said to make the transition from playing the wound strings to the plain strings less of a contrast (or words to that effect).

Hi Slidefever,
It is a good idea... I have never tried it, but there is no reason why not. If it works for you, that is all that matters.

Hi Michael,
Tried it , like it! I find the PBs have more punch in the bass and the 3rd (nickel) is smooth and stands out without being harsh. Do you happen to know if Malcolm still does single sets of string for experimenting? With heavier strings 16 to 59 and a brass slide it sounds as if the guitar is going to explode, its that loud! The dynamic range seems greater too. Compared to the 15 to 56 set I usually use, it doesn't seem that much harder to play. I don't know if its my imagination but the intonation and tuning stability seem better. Would the heavier string do that?
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
Apologies for the late reply, but I only just noticed that you had asked a question....
16/59s are great on National guitars. As long as everything is stable, which on a new one like yours, it definitely is, they sound and feel great.
I used to use 16/59s on all my National guitars.
The mix of PB and nickel, no reason why not. If it sounds good and works for you, that is what matters. I must try it sometime.
