Other thoughts... I always thought that the Schireson Brothers got screwed by the court ruling that found their designs in violation of the Dopyera patents and awarded the Dopyeras possession of the completed instruments and parts in stock at the Schireson factory. The Schiresons had received two U.S. Patents and their work seemed at least as different as the National and Dobro designs were to each other. I read somewhere that John Dopyera inspected the Schireson goods after the judgment, found them of no use and sold them for $20 or some such to a junk dealer.
But check out this instrument. Isn't the coverplate and cone somehow familiar? Could these be leftover parts from the Schireson seizure? I'm hoping that the experts here can dispel my heretical thoughts, as I certainly don't want to entertain any bad thoughts about John Dopyera!

Its been on ebay for a long time - probably since the dopyeras collection sale (whenever that was).

Rare does not necessarily equal valuable. I wish the seller luck with this auction (again - this is probably the fourth time I've seen it up on eBay). Considering the condition, the seller is asking far too much for this instrument.
Then again, it only needs to be sold once.

..."probably since the dopyeras collection sale (whenever that was)"...
elderly [dot-com] handled the sale of the more pristine instruments in 2010.

I don't remember this guitar being part of the Dopyera auction.
It is an interesting piece of history that should be kept in a collection, but they are asking a high price for it. The thing is with this type of collectors' item, is that there will never be any more Penetros built by John Dopyera. What price do you put on that?

Mark I had the feeling that I had seen this thing before; I should have checked your book first!

Hi, Everyone. What a great forum. Thanks for having me onboard. I'm a casual collector and have been doing research on Schireson resonator guitars. Does anyone know a good place to post an ad searching for a Schireson guitar? Thanks so much.

Hi Charmedlife417,
Welcome to our forum and thank you for your kind words.
I would search eBay, post adverts on this forum in Tin Can Alley (title it 'Schireson Guitar Wanted'), on the Weenie Campbell forum, and on 'Slide Guitar' on Facebook. Those ads should reach out to most of the resonator guitar fraternity.

Hi folks.... you can believe the details. I still have the email from John Dopyera's son at least confirming the gist of my story regarding this reso. Yes, perhaps the asking price was high considering it's condition, as declared in my eBay description. But as Michael said, it only needs to be sold once. Patience paid off as it was just recently sold for a 'best offer' not far from the asking price. I'm sad to see it go as I do believe it was a special little guitar, but as I was neither playing it or otherwise making any good use of it, I am happy that it went to someone who will pay it more homage. And now I can afford that Koa Weissenborn that will get played. Happy holidays to all!

"Then again, it only needs to be sold once." I meant to attribute this quote to Brad. But I think Michael concurred in essence..... Gary
