Just got an old beat up strat copy to set up for slide. The nut is pretty low so I think it needs replacing with a higher one. So.......... my questions - (a) how do I get the old nut out? (without completely trashing the neck - I'm sure I read something somewhere about heating it??) and (b) where do you get higher nuts from? Any thoughts welcomed. If I can sort this out the next project is building a guitar from parts!!

If it has an adjustable bridge try bringing that up first, also putting on thicker strings will bring the action up. If all this fails with the strings removed you should gently tap the nut from the side of either E string (top or bottom) and it should free up, Then with it out take it to a guitar/music shop to size it against a replacement and get filing! Of course if you wish to play lap style replacement slipover nut adaptors are out there. Good luck Lee.

Thanks Lee. Would you believe when I took the strings off the nut FELL off! So it looks like filing is in order. Can't believe the quickness of helpful responses on this site!!

Hi Charlie & Lee,
It sounds like you have got the Strat sorted out for playing slide. Thanks Lee for the excellent advice. Charlie, you should try a set of my MM Newtone Electric Slide 'Classics' strings on the Strat. For open G & D they are the perfect gauges.
Keep in touch,
Shine On, Michael.
