I'm interested in what films are around with live footage on them. What have people seen, and was it anygood? Its a discussion that started on the original forum.

Hey Michael, Hope you're well and practicing all the stuff I taught you at Exeter On the subject of blues documentaries, in 1994 Martin Scorcese filmed Clapton at the Fillmore West on his From the Cradle Club Show segment of the tour. This was due for release but canned at the last minute, but available on bootlegs. I haven't seen it, but have been told it also contains lots of historical footage, as well as EC. probably a pre-cursor to his recent set of blues documentaries. www.geetarz.org/reviews/clapton/nothing-but-the-blues-dvd-remaster.htm Can't make it to Pocklington, but have been practicing hard! Joe.

Hi Joe,
Good to hear from you. I have been practicing all you showed me at Blues Week....(very good joke!!!!)
The EC film sounds great, thank you for letting us know here at MM HQ. I will have a look at the link, thanks.
I hope you are still working hard on the blues stuff from Exeter? Keep working at it, you have a great feel for playing blues & slide guitar. Plus....your guitar, the Lebeda Dobro, sounds wicked.
Keep in touch, Shine On, Michael.

I guess we could throw in the DVD of Robert Johnsons life, Can you hear the wind howl. it is a sort of documentary, come biography of his life with some good input from the likes of Johnny Shines, Keb Mo, Son House, etc. Well worth seeking out, and Mike if you read this I will give you it back soon!!!!!!!
Kevin.

There's a DVD out on Yazoo Records - Masters of the Country Blues, introduced by Taj Mahal and with great footage of Bukka White and Son House. Believe there are others in the series e.g. Rev Gary Davis. Can also recommend the DVDs of The American Folk and Blues Festival 1962-66 (2 vols) which include film of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Miss'ippi Fred McDowell, Howlin Wolf and many others. there is now a 3rd volume to add to the American Folk and Blues Festival, and in my opinion it is the better one of the three as it has Son House, Bukka White and Skip James. The other DVD that I would recommend to every one is devil got my woman. It captures the feeling of a old barrel house. It may not be a documentary but it documents feeling something many documentary don’t do.

Hi there !
A great video that I've never seen in the shops since I bought it around 1990 is live footage from a 1980 Mississippi Blues Festival (in Greenwood I think, Freedom Village ? Woodstock ? Can't remember exactly)
The first artist on the video (excluding intro stuff) is Rev. Boyd Rivers. WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This guy is fantastic ! I think he was in his sixties then. Powerful singer and great guitarist (played electric, solo). Apparently, when on some blues musician hunting trip in the 1960's (can't remember which - either trying to find info on Elmore James, or trying to find Miss. Fred McDowell) they were advised by locals that a guy named Boyd Rivers was pretty good, and played slide too. They didn't have time to track him down. Unfortunately, Boyd Rivers was only recorded in 1980 (in this video, and also for some German guys, available on a triple CD of 1980's living blues musicians). He must have been great back in the 1950-60's !
Whole bunch of other guys on it - Johnny Shines, Robert Jn Lockwood, Hammie Nixon, Big Joe Williams, Willie Dixon hosting. Also has Lefty Diz on electric with his band. Fife and drum band too.
Wish I could get this on DVD ! My tape copy is getting a bit dodgy in even a good video player. I'm worried the tape will chew up soon (its now a bit wobbly in places !)

There is a new Scorsese-produced concert documentary -- Lightning in a Bottle -- that opened a few weeks ago in Los Angeles and New York. The bad news is that I haven't heard anything since; the good news is that may mean we'll see it on DVD sooner than later ... You can see the lineup and a trailer at www.sonyclassics.com/lightninginabottle/poster.html

For all sorts of audio and video clips I've recently found that using www.dogpile.com/is OK. Finds all sorts of clips and music.
