Thought I'd better start a new thread with this, cos I hijacked the 'Donmo' one - sorry Alan! Does anybody know of any other girls who play blues slide guitar, or resonator guitar in general, in the UK - not necessarily professionals? We've come up with Emily Druce and Angelina Grimshaw so far. Surely there must be others....... Sonya

Hi All, we apppear to be able to list numerous Amercian female blues guitarists, but not British ones, apart from the two or three already mentioned. The late Jo Ann Kelly (sister of Dave Kelly) was a stunning acoustic blues musician from the south of England. She was more than just a great British female artist, she was one of the greatest blues performers of the past forty years.
In addition to the North American list ....there's Del Ray & Sue Foley.
Shine On, MM

Hi Michael (and Richard & Lee), Yes I agree - Jo Ann Kelly was just awesome. Did you ever meet her, Michael? I have an album of her music, Key to the Highway - rare & unissued recordings 1968-74, and also the Catfish CD Been Here & Gone with Jo Ann, Woody Mann and Son House. It's very moving stuff as Son House was in poor health by then though his voice was still incredibly strong. So it looks like there are very few girls playing the blues in the UK today. I know several excellent girl guitarists but none of them are really interested in blues music which is a shame. Richard - I'm looking forward to jamming with Memphis Minnie, but not quite yet......... Sonya

Hi Sonya, Yes I did meet Jo Ann and saw her play a few times. I saw her her in 1985 at the West End Centre in Aldershot, I was playing with Mike Cooper & we opened the show. I think she was playing with Bob Hall, as I remember it. Then I met her again in 1989 at the WOMAD Blues festival at South Hill Park in Bracknell; as I remember it she played two different shows, the first was with her band & the secone was a solo concert where she was joined for a few numbers by Rory Block. They were wonderful together. I believe I may have a bootleg recording of that somewhere. When I met Bonnie Raitt in the mid 1990s as soon as the subject went to acoustic blues and slide guitar in the UK, Bonnie just raved about Jo An Kelly and how great she was. A great record to get is called Jo Ann Kelly RETROSPECT 1964-1972, it was released in the UK in the early 90s I think. Jo Ann compiled the album so it is an interesting set of material. Also highly recommended are the various Kicking Mule/Sonet albums produced by Stefan Grossman; they feature various players - Sam Mitchell, Mike Cooper, Stefan Grossman, there's some great Jo Ann Kelly tracks on them. Here is an early photo of Jo Ann Kelly from the cover of Retrospect. Shine On, Michael.

Ah, yes. But did you notice in photo the great pile of trees she's bought to make the case? This is getting silly

Ditto the Jo Ann Kelly comments - I fondly recall being awed by the power of her voice the first time of hearing her back in the 60s, at Mike Cooper's 'Elephant' folk/blues club in Reading; that was when I really understood what blues-hollerin' meant! (Her brother Dave -whatever became of him? - was pretty scary too)No PAs back then! Oh & Angelina Grimshaw still in fine fettle (saw her last week), but that National of hers not getting too much use of late, sadly.

Hi Rick, Thanks for your thoughts on Jo Ann Kelly. Her brother, Dave Kelly, went on in 1979 to form the Blues Band with Paul Jones and they're still going strong. Dave also stills does solo shows & performs as an acoustic duo with Paul Jones. I have known Dave since the mid 1980's & I have great respect for his playing and his contribution to the European Blues scene. (Photo of Dave Kelly) Keep in touch Rick, Shine On, Michael.

Hi Michael, yeah, I knew about DK, excuse the halfassed attempt at irony - he was (& is) a great slide player; it was hearing him in a club back around '67 tearing into Miss. Fred's 'Few Short Lines' that propelled me into wanting to learn slide, so I feel a debt of gratitude to him - hey, he could holler a bit, too, eh? Must be in the genes.. cheers, Rick

There's a lady called Sarah Jory playing slide (mainly lap steel and pedal steel I think). I've not heard her, but just stumbled on her site the other week.....you never know, she may hit the spot for you.
