Clarke Peters started the second part of his ‘Black Music in Europe’ on BBC Radio 4 yesterday. More rare archive recordings starting in the 20s and 30s. First of three programs. Pete

The first 3 programs are still on BBC iPlayer, and (I think) more interesting as they tell the story of recorded Black music from 1900. PT

Hope this links works. Stick with it for the full 2 mins and watch Steve Wade clog dance whilst playing his banjo. Watched him d it live over 30 years ago at the Robin Hood pub in Lambley Nottingham. Steve was guesting en route to the Cambridge Folk Festival that year. He didn't have white hair then but did wear a boiler suit to highlight his clogs and street cred. He's still going strong just google him.
Cheers to all.

Sunny's great isn't he? We could all take a lesson from that William of Occam "less is more" ethos. Actually, I was mining down underneath the slag heap beneath the stairs looking for my vinyl of Joe Walsh's masterpiece "Barnstorm" when I chanced upon Sunny Ade. I also emerged with four John Fahey albums, Greasy Truckers Party, BBC TV's Monty Python album and a Max Bygraves sleeve that I know contains a Max Miller 12"! Loads more in that rich seam of boxes too...click-hiss-click-hiss! I have Humble Pie's "Rockin' the Fillmore" which I (literally) rocked over one disk on my mum's old rocking chair (now restored and in our own sitting room). If you jiggle the 2" radial split, it still plays albeit with some unexpected percussive beats ;<D Happy days!

Also, Kevin Ayres' "Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes" and Herbie Flowers' "Flanker". Ahem.
Someone has to rip them from the vinyl and upload to YouTube and I guess it'll have to be me. To hell with the IP.

Monday’s Blues Show (BBC Radio 2, 8pm) had a Louisiana Red track I hadn’t heard before. His tone (always great) was amazing. Recording done in Germany, I think. Pete

Pete, that is a recently released live album from Germany. The song, When My Mother Was Living, was one that I played with Red on every show we did together. It is in fact about blues singer, Victoria Spivey, not his real mother. Red always referred to Victoria as his mother because she looked after him at some point in his early life.
I recorded every concert we did together and I have all the live radio sessions we did. It is a lot of material and I really ought to sort through it and put together a live album of the two of us.

Amy - acoustic rehearsal of the Zutons song, Valerie.
Beautiful!
I spent a day with the Zutons at the BBC just around the time they released the original version of Valerie. Nice bunch of people!

TT I think he's one of the best vocalists ever too. Great artist. A friend of mine worked as a plugger for Dick James and worked on this record in 1976. I am sure I have a signed copy....somewhere! Shine On Michael
