I was working at a festival in Germany once when Van M. was on the bill. His band went onstage and started playing and he just wandered around backstage looking at the ground for what seemed like an eternity but was probably only a few minutes. When he took the stage the place erupted--that's how good a showman he was regardless of his vocal talents. Oh almost forgot. This is what I'm listening to:
As an aside I used to have a VW transporter that I called Van Morrison.

This is just so great - Ry Cooder and Buckwheat Zydeco doing Fats Domino's My Girl Josephine. I am sure I have posted it before and I can't believe this performance was 14 years ago. Where do those decades go!
....and the original

Listening today to my dear late friend, the king of Palm Wine Guitar Music, S.E. Rogie. I know I have posted his music on here before, but as the years go by it becomes more special to me.
This song, Dieman Noba Smoke Tafee (Dead Men Don't Smoke Marijuana) was the title song of SE's final album. It features the beautiful electric guitar playing of another dear departed friend, Emile Ogoo.
S.E. died on stage at a WOMAD festival in Estonia in 1994. He died in a friend's arms in front of his adoring audience.
We shared a mutual love of West African music, 1930s Hawaiian music, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and good times.
This is Twistin' With The Morning Stars, and Do Me Justice, recorded in the 1960s when SE had his own label and pressed his own 45s in Sierra Leone. He did the whole thing, including delivering them to the radio stations and shops. These tracks also feature Emile Ogoo on lead guitar.
His full name was Sooliman Ernest Rogie, but was known in my family as South East Rogie!

One of my all time favourite albums is King Sunny Adé's JU JU MUSIC from 1983. Here is a live performance of Ja Funmi from that year.
...and while we're there, here is a complete concert from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1983
Just keeping it musical on here :-)

I saw that a couple days ago and TE does a great job of finger syncing an audio recording that is not him playing a muddy aria with bandaged fingers... hollywood aside, its an amazing version of the tune.
