Hi Michael, your last reply begs the question, if you don't use them, why did you have them put in? Was it for a specific reason, or was it in case you might need them someday? Just curious, Frank

Hi Frank,
I did not write that very clearly, thanks for picking up the error!
I do use the Highlanders occasionally with my full electric band.
As a professional musician turning up at all types of stages and events, I must be covered for all eventualities. So I have the Highlanders in my guitars, and I always carry a Shure SM57 too.
I also have a pickup fitted in my Dobro, it is a first generation McIntire Dobro pickup. I have owned that guitar for eight years and can only recall plugging it in three times.

I've had good results with the new Shatten PU,(MIXED WITH A MIC!) sounds as good as the single cone Highlander"s in my opinion, wich I owned in a NR Jazz-Blues,

Oh, sorry! I did skim the thread to see if it'd been mentioned, obviously not closely enough!

Ok, I remember reading both those posts now, I'd just not heard of the hotplate at the time so it didn't really go in (just found it this morning whilst browsing Mike Dowling's site)

Well, having used it for quite a while both for practice and at gigs, I think it works really well. Not your usual 'electric' sounding magnetic pickup at all, surprisingly very natural sounding. Seems a lot of money (any good pickup is not going to be cheap), but you only have to buy it once. If you change your guitar you can just take it off.

Just make sure that your guitar has a nine hole plate and not an eight.

If you are dealing with an old National (as per the original question) it should fit.
Quote from the Mike Dowling site.
"One nice feature (and there are many) of the Hot-Plate is that its slightly oblong screw holes around the perimeter allow for it to fit vintage Nationals without disturbing the authenticity of an older instrument".

I own a National Polychrome with a Highlander pickup. I think the pickup sounds pretty good, however, it is prone to feedback. It seems that Nationals were designed to sound loud as acoustic instruments, but resist being amplified via electrical means.

Hi markm,
If you are getting feedback problems with a National Reso-Phonic guitar fitted with a Highlander to the manufacturers specs, then it is most likely caused by incorrect settings of the of the EQ, gain and reverb, on the PA or acoustic amplifier that it is plugged into.
Highlanders are not perfect, but they are the best natural sounding pickups available and I have never experienced feedback problems with them. As I have said, I do not use them often, but I do have 15 years experience of using them and being around people who use them all the time. The Tricone Highlander is more difficult to control than the single cone pickup, but with EQs set correctly it really should not feedback.
My criticism of amplifying a National or a Dobro with any type of pickup is not because it won't amplify the guitar, it is because I believe that to hear them properly, resonator guitars have to be heard as acoustic instruments through a microphone, not because of feedback problems.
