Hello everybody, Nice to see a reference to Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark was the night, cold was the ground", one of my all time favourites. I agree with Michael that Ry Cooder's "Paris, Texas" was inspired by BWJ's earlier tune rather than being a straight copy. Ry had already recorded a slightly more accurate cover of the tune on his 1970 "Ry Cooder" album. Quite right that the tune was included in the Voyager Golden Record. You might like to see what else was on the record: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_RecordAn interesting selection. Good to see Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" also made the list. Another of my all time favourites All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red)

If the Voyager does ever reach another civilisation, it will not take them long to realise that the music was chosen by male Baby Boomers from the 20th century!

No-one mentioned "copy". "Re-working", ie adapting and arranging is a legitimate way of making a piece of music your own.
The point is that, without "Dark Was the Night", there would have been no "Paris,Texas" theme. Mr.Cooder has always acknowledged the link.

I thought the point was whether we shared Geoff's admiration for the interpretation of 'Paris Texas' and our opinion of Suzuki resonators. Discussing whether 'Paris Texas' is an original or not distracted us away from the main 'point'.

Thanks Chris. Your are right that we should not be discussing the legalities of Ry's music. That is for him & his publisher to work out. I also don't think professional musicians/recording artists should review or critique each others' work publicly. That is the reason I never comment on another professional musician's playing on this forum. I don't like to see it as I think it blurs the line, especially in specialist music magazines when recording artists start writing CD reviews. Dodgy ground in my opinion!
A good stimulating thread!
Shine On Michael.

I personally love Stotzem's version of this piece. It's by far the best on the net, and as a solo without the benifit of the atmosphere provided by the movie backdrop I reckon it's even better than the original. It is quite different in some places and I prefer this rendition.

Cooder
Stotzem
Compare if you want. I love them both. Stotzem's version affects me more emotionally. If you play them at the same time, they sound tremendous!
JStotzem said, " My dobro is an old japanese made "Suzuki". I change the resonator to a better one and I run the Fishman Dobro Pickup through a Fishman Aura Pedal."
